Jefferson Airplane – Somebody to Love Lyrics 12 years ago
Logical interpretation, Iggy, but this song was written around or before 1965, when Grace & Darby were in the band The Great Society. The Summer of Love was '67, so when this song was written, things were still pretty "groovy" (sorry, couldn't resist ;)... Could be about 'Nam, could be about any number of things, as our govt has been lying to us constantly till even today. This great song is still very relevant.

The Doors – Break on Through (To the Other Side) Lyrics 12 years ago
The lyrics are great, of course. It's a Door's song. They did everything perfectly. Too bad they can't display the lyrics. All of these songs are written by the same people & copyrighted, so I don't understand why this is the only song of this album that can't be printed.
Anyway, this is one of 3 perfect songs to come out in The Summer of Love ('67). The other two are Somebody to Love and White Rabbit, by the Airplane.

Aside from the lyrics, what makes this such a great song is the fast pace & energy of the vocal. Jim was THE most underrated singer in rock. He had a GREAT voice. It was silky, strong, and his delivery was unique. This song presents him at the top of his game.

That's so true. Not a lot of "bad" Doors songs, are there...?! ;p

This is my favorite Doors song as well. You ESL class came up with a nice interpretation. I don't really buy it, but that's what conjecture's for, right?? ;p It's common for the sun & light to symbolize "good" or happiness, or Life. And for the Night to represent Light's antithesis. But, for someone like me, and maybe Jim, I'm a night person. I prefer the soft night to the glare of day. I love it's mystery. I love how I can go unnoticed in the shadows if I want. Or find "love", or whatever. The day is more "normal". It's about work, and healthiness, and being too busy to think a lot. The night is about intimacy, and silence, and mystery, anonymity, and reflection, and rest.. The night was made for writers, as well as lovers, and insomniacs. ;p

I think you're both reading more into it than he intended. I know, that's part of the fun! Remember he was only 27 when he died, so there weren't THAT many turning points in such a short life. He also wrote most of that first album BEFORE the Doors formed. So, this came out in '67, so we'll say he wrote them before '66, when he was 23. Now, for someone that age, those are "heavy" lyrics. They're heavy for any age really. BUT, do either of you write...? If you do you'd know that sometimes something takes over. The writing comes from somewhere out of the ethers, as if a gift of the gods. While he was extremely well-read for a young man; and that def influenced his lyrics, that writing that comes from nowhere happens. Ask any writer. I think the gods gifted him extremely well before his fame kicked in.

It's a great song to pass out to at the "end of the night" of heavy partying. When I was 15-16 in the 70's, me & my cousin would smoke a lot of herb & do some drinking. My parents just divorced, so we had my house to ourselves most weekend eves. There's just something about pot & music, isn't there? Great music becomes all the more hypnotic. At around 2am when we'd crash, my cousin would put a couple of albums on the turntable (we used vinyl then! cds are better, but the album art was great), and we'd find realms of bliss while falling asleep to this & similar rock "lullibyes". Doors, Janis, Airplane/Starship, Heart, Fleetwood Mac, Aerosmith, Zepplin were always on that "HiFi" turntable... the high light of my youth. ;p
