Queens of the Stone Age – The Vampyre Of Time And Memory Lyrics 12 years ago
It's about getting older, looking back and realizing that you're not who you thought you were, and unsure as to who you are or can be.

One of those moments everyone has at a particular "stage" of life.

Queens of the Stone Age – First It Giveth Lyrics 12 years ago
Like most of the QOTSA repertoire, it's an introspective look at the more seedier parts of life.

In this particular case, I also think it's about drugs. To me it sounds like the description of a very psychedelic drugs experience (a heavy dose of shrooms or mescaline).

First verse: the hallucinations begin to kick in, the ego begins to dissolve. The protagonist is still clear of mind.

Second verse: the nauseousness associated with heavier doses of shrooms, mescaline or designer drugs begins to come up. The protagonist begins to fear he has taken too much of the drug.

Third verse: I admit, doesn't fit that well. Perhaps the itchy/anxious/excited part of the trip when the world slowly becomes more strange and the protagonist tries to keep a clear mind? ("loyal, only to you")

Fourth verse: the protagonist realises that he did, indeed, take too much. In the last moments of clarity before tuning into the drug completely, the protagonist converses with himself, on how he could have been such an idiot taking that dose.

Verse: Everyone who's done psychedelics might recognize the feeling. First the drug gives you something, then it takes away all control and sanity.

Sixth, seventh and eight verse are about experiencing the horror of a bad trip, trying to stay in touch with yourself and reality, all the while plunging into the murky depths of your own psyche.

Ninth verse is the coming down. The protagonist is still sane, but he has surrendered some of his own innocence/former personality in the trip. Now he remembers: first drugs give an experience, then they take you away.

Tricky – Hell Is Round the Corner Lyrics 12 years ago
What makes the song so powerful is the seemingly non sequitur-like nature of the lyrics. I don't think there's one single "meaning" to discern from the text, but the imagery of Tricky's lyrics stimulates the formulation of one's own interpretation.

Personally, it speaks to me because of the melancholia of a traumatic past. Everyone with a traumatic past (and let's face it, we're all scarred) will know that "Hell" always remains "just around the corner" of where ever you are. No matter whether you got better.

To me, that's the core of the song. You can move beyond the shadows of your past, but they'll always be there. Perhaps there's some point when it's gone, but until then: you have to live with yourself.
