Trivium – Shogun Lyrics 5 years ago
I think the song is describing the act of committing seppuku (ritual suicide in which you cut open your belly and rip your guts out, also known as harakiri).

The lyrics here are wrong imo. It says on this page: "your insides win", which makes no sense to me, but when I hear the song I hear "your insides rend". As we all know Matt likes to swallow a dictionary before writing songs. To rend means (according to Merriam Webster) either 1: to perform an act of tearing or splitting; or 2: to become torn or split. The latter would be the obvious meaning as the subject of the sentence is "your insides".

And the seas will rise as serpents (would imply blood and guts)
Spawned from the mouth of earth's surface (the wound inflicted during seppuku)
Soon the skies will fall fast, burning (dying maybe?)
Open wide and eat the suffering (your belly)

There is also revenge in the song that does not align directly with suicide, however this reminds me of the story of the 47 ronin. They avenged their feudal lord and by doing so they violated a law from the shogunate. The punishment, as you may expect, was that all ronin had to commit ritual suicide (one was spared actually, yet all others committed seppuku).

Another interesting detail is that before committing seppuku, one had the opportunity to write a death poem (literally write a poem about death right before you take your own life).

So my interpretation would be that the song is about one of the 47 ronin writing his death poem before committing sepukku.

Trivium – The Deceived Lyrics 12 years ago
I think this song is about the abuse of absolute power over someone. It is obvious that a lot of people think about religion when reading the lyrics, but I think that's not what Matt's aiming for here. I think he is warning us for literal interpretations of religion (extremism) and not all religion. Plus, manufactured god reminds me more of Stalin and Hitler deceiving the people into believing that they were magnificent and very capable leaders, if not gods. He is warning us for blind believes.
