| Dan Mangan – Pine For Cedars Lyrics

building off of the previous comment, this song is very much an ode to vancouver, but specifically the main street neighbourhood. that said, "been around" refers to the three bean around the world cafes along main st, followed by slickety jim's chat and chew diner on main and 18th and the nice cafe on main and 8th. he really emphasizes "lugged", but i'm not sure about that one. and given the whole 'pining' for cedars and oak (neighbouring street to main) and all that.. really, the whole thing is a big extended play on words. just great. love dan mangan. |

this song reminds me of the end of douglas copeland's novel, life without god. the book's protagonist recalls all these instances in his life that lead him to believe his life is spiritually void. it ends with him venturing into the wilderness to find himself in relation to a higher power.
as far as this song figures, that character might, in fact, not find what he was looking for. pretty bleak. but i think rather than interpreting this as a song that straight up reflects atheism or the idea that god doesn't exist, i think you also have to be open to the idea that the writer may be alluding to the idea that spiritual meaning isn't something that we can always demand on the spot. it requires a lifetime to gain meaning or truth.. even then, we may not ultimately find it. but it's the earnest seeking out of it that matters most. |

| Jake Bugg – Seen It All Lyrics

I'll admit that my first impression of this song was, "This 18-year-old kid is really singing about having seen it all?" But that's a subjective hang up.. your age ultimately doesn't preclude you from having a legitimate sense of despair for the worst that the world can offer, which is what this song represents for Bugg. Super catchy too, anyway. |
