Well I know it's about how people try and act like bigshots because they think they're cool on the internet, but personally it makes me think of Portnoy. Sitting on the sidelines, starting a bunch of garbage side projects, not content with being nameless. Not saying I have anything against Portnoy, that's just the first thought that comes to mind for me. |

Some people have it, but I want to specify exactly what happened. A man named Nicholas is visiting a hypnotherapist because he keeps having a recurring dream where he vividly enters another person's life, which is preventing him from living his own life. He learns the other life is that of a girl named Victoria, and that Nicholas is the reincarnation of Victoria, which is why he's the one she's haunting. He also learns that she was murdered, and won't leave him alone until he finds out the truth of her murder. Nicholas goes to a house and meets an old man who tells him what he knows of the murder, then tells him he'll find out the truth in time. So Nicholas finds a newspaper article that explains the current story of what happened. He learns Victoria was seeing a man named Julian, who fell into a dark place after becoming addicted to alcohol and gambling, and breaks up with him. Then one night someone heard a struggle and ran over to find Julian laying over Victoria's body, and a note that's allegedly from Julian saying that he can't live without her. So it's assumed that Julian killed Victoria. Nicholas then goes back into Victoria's memories again and finds out after breaking up with Julian, his brother Edward began to comfort her, and quickly fell in love with her. So behind his brothers back they began their secret affair. Nicholas finally realizes this and the final memory is revealed to him. He learns Julian told Victoria he was working to get over his vices because he loved her too much and wanted to get back together. They agree to meet up, and since Victoria had always loved Julian she plans to break it off with his brother Edward. They thought the meeting was a secret, but Edward shows up. He's angry Victoria left him for Julian, and gets into a fight with Julian, then pulls out a gun and shoots him. Victoria starts to scream so he tells her "Open your eyes Victoria." He then kills her and writes the suicide note they found on Julian then leaves. Now that Nicholas knows the truth he returns home. He starts relaxing and getting comfortable, saying how he learned so much and is happy to be living his own life again, when the Hypnotherapist comes in. The Hypnotherapist is Edward's reincarnation, and does murder Nicholas in order to continue the cycle. I know it's lengthy, but that's the whole album summarized for you/ |

Wrong. They clarified on an interview during a live DVD, the Hypnotherapist was Edward (The Miracle) reincarnated, just as Nicholas is Victoria's reincarnation, and did in fact kill Nicholas. Victoria was trying to reveal the truth, AND warn Nicholas that Edwards reincarnation was going to murder him. It creates a murderous cycle, Edward kills Victoria, Edward's reincarnation kills Victoria's reincarnation. An Octavarium of sorts. |

Someone already nailed, it's about how everything moves in circles. From what I've heard and determined the first section is Petrucci, writing about how he wanted to be his own person, and not a musician, but was inspired to become one, and now has become an inspiration for others, bringing everything full circle. The second part is by LaBrie, it's just a fictional story, but the man starts out in a state of catatonic sleep, awakens, then ultimately falls back into his state of catatonic sleep. AKA it ended like it began, with him in a state of catatonic sleep. The Third part is by Portnoy, similar to the first one about how they didn't want to be like their idols and role models. Ultimately they couldn't help it and no matter how much they tried they did become like them and he mentions at the end how they've come full circle. The fourth, also by Portnoy emphasizes how every song on the album was all part of one big theme. Every song on the album goes up a note in key, and Octavarium, being the eighth song, is the Octave, which is the same note as the root (Root of All Evil). Then ends with LaBrie saying "Trapped inside this Octavarium" which is about how they're trapped in the cycle. The Fifth part, which is written by Petrucci, who also wrote the first in order to emphasize how the song is ending like it began, is just blatantly saying we move in circles and that everything is cyclic. There's much more to it, but it would be even longer to type out. |
