Seconded on both counts. I think it's also about the helplessness that results from addiction: "...a vessel that's sinking at sea." An "apparition [beckons]" the person speaking, implying that the substance abuse has an almost otherworldly control of his actions and thoughts. Also, I got a feeling of being ashamed of the sordid lifestyle that comes with drug abuse, lying to and deceiving those you care about ("Step out from the moonlight like it’s a game we play/ The checkerboard is tainted, drops of red will lead the way/ Black are the lies, gold are the tongues of the glorified"). |
