| Oh and the "three fingers point back to you" is a double entendre I think. Firstly because - as you know, if you swear at someone you'll have 3 fingers facing your direction...but I think it's also saying that, even if she gets mad at him, really she knows it's her problem, not his. All the fingers are pointing at her for cheating on her partner. Our singer is - it would seem - only guilty by being party to her desires, and for wanting it to happen. | |

I think @[silentchad:33143] has got closest so far. Reading through the lyrics there is undoubtedly an air of guilt or shame running through the romantic scene in the song. People have said the last verse is perplexing but - if you take the song as something of an illicit love affair - it ties things together nicely. My take is that the protagonist is a willing accomplice to a love affair. In short, he's out on this drive in secret with a girl he has felt some chemistry with, and that is clearly in a relationship she's unhappy about - evidently leading her to destructive tendencies (hence lines regarding "we'll BOTH drink and drive.") He's willing to be a part of this affair - clearly he likes her - but would rather she'd get out of whatever relationship she's in. This is seen in the last verse - the one that refers to time. "Set my watch by street-side clock; a needle in echoed groove." - he's echoing her behaviour, setting his actions by hers. "Make him notice with both fists, cause quitting alone will never get you dry." - seems to suggest maybe her relationship is with someone toxic, and the singer is saying she'll never be free of it unless she fights back and gets away - which might be why they've had to escape on a secret night drive in the first place. I really wanted to get to there bottom of this song; it's been a special one for me since the album first dropped 16(!) years ago. It's this beautiful blend of romance and innocence (the tones of it perhaps being a first sexual encounter - countered by this darker edge shedding more light on the situation). It's nice to know other people have had moments in their lives connected to this same song. Tell me I'm wrong, or help me analyse this further! |
