Mumford & Sons – Lover of the Light Lyrics 4 years ago
@[passion8expressions:38513] it’s actually referring to his relationship with God not a romantic relationship. Almost every song on this album, if not every song, is about spirituality and religion (primarily his questioning of religion and his return to God).

@[BenjaminC:38512] this song is religious/spiritual and has nothing to do with a romantic relationship. Not sure why this would be the highest rated comment as it’s incorrect.

@[TheLiam13:38511] I agree with a lot of your interpretation. I 100% believe this song is about return to spirituality and to a relationship with God, not a romantic relationship as others have said.

@[niqht1:38510] this song is written to be somewhat open to interpretation as not all people who listen to Mumford are spiritual or religious. But IMO the intended context is really about returning to spirituality and God/Jesus. The lover of the light refers to himself as the lover of God John 8:12- “Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” The shadows refers to him leaving darkness to return to the light. The middle of the night is the middle of this darkness which turns into light as he awakens to God’s love. He admits in the song that he has done wrong but he is ready to accept God as his king. This is what he means by “I’ll build your throne”.

This song is very clearly about spiritual awakening and his return to his relationship with God.

“In the middle of the night, I may watch you go
There'll be no value in the strength of walls that I have grown
There'll be no comfort in the shade of the shadows thrown
But I'd be yours if you'd be mine”

This is referring to his awakening. He had put up walls so that God could not reach him, but they are no match for God. There is no comfort in his hiding from God’s light in the shadows. He is now relenting and opening his heart and soul to God’s love and light.

“Stretch out my life and pick the seams out
Take what you like, but close my ears and eyes
Watch me stumble over and over”

He’s asking God to transform his life. Take away everything. That does not serve him, but protect him from the pain of it all. He stumbles over and over trying to make it through it. This awakening is painful but he wants it so badly.

“I have done wrong, you build your tower
But call me home and I will build a throne
And wash my eyes out never again”

He’s acknowledging his past faults and wrongs. “Your tower” here refers to the Tower of Babel which is mentioned elsewhere in this album too. He is asking God to accept him in, call him home to him and he will build a throne for him as his king.

“But love the one you hold
And I'll be your goal
To have and to hold”

This is speaking from Gods perspective. God wants him to love the ones he holds dear to him. Being god-like or Christ-like will be his goal.

“A lover of the light”
A lover of God/Jesus is who he will be or who he is becoming.

“”Skin too tight and eyes like marbles
You spin me high, so watch me as I glide
Before I tumble homeward, homeward”

I’m not sure about this first line but the end is talking about returning to God’s love

“I know I tried, I was not stable
Flawed by pride, I miss my sanguine eyes
So hold my hands up, breathe in and breathe out”

He has tried to open his heart to God before, but his pride caused him to turn away from God. He was stuck in his ego with this wall up to distance himself from God. He misses the cheerful person he was in God’s love. He’s going to hold his hands up as people do in church and praise God. Breathing in God’s light and love in peace and harmony.

Hozier – Take Me to Church Lyrics 7 years ago
@[aquila0989:26305] your response is the best I’ve read yet and I think the closest to the real interpretation. There are clearly a lot of catholic references and you cleared up some for me being that I wasn’t raised Catholic.

Hozier – Take Me to Church Lyrics 7 years ago
I think the song is about his relationship being unacceptable in the eyes of the church, for whatever reason. Maybe his lover is transgender? “She’s the giggle at a funeral”. But he loves and adores her even though she’s not accepted by the church and neither is he for being with her. A lot of the lyrics I think are poking fun at church people and the church. “That’s a fine looking high horse”, he’s talking about how they’re all hypocrites. “Tell you my sins so you can sharpen your knives” is referring to confessional in Catholicism. You confess your sins just so they can condemn you for them. “We were born sick, you heard them say it.” Is referring to all Christians being “born sinners”. This is contradicting a lot of what they teach which is forgiveness and that everyone sins, but yet they don’t forgive or accept certain “sins” (like homosexuality). “Take me to church” is referring to sex, she’s the only thing he is worshiping and their sex is his church. He’s basically saying that if loving her is seen as wrong, he doesn’t want to be right. He’s accepting his fate. “Give me that deathless death” refers to the afterlife promised by Christians. Life after death. He’s talking about all the things they promise if he will just confess his sins to them, but it’s a lie. “To drain the whole sea” is talking about when god parted the Red Sea. “Command me to be well. Amen, amen...etc.” is talking about how Christians always say they will pray for people who are sinners.

Rihanna – Stay Lyrics 12 years ago
In the beginning of this song I think she is talking about drug use "All along it was a fever. A cold sweat hot-headed believer" Then I think she is talking to God "I threw my hands in the air and said, 'Show me something,'" She is asking God to tell her what to do. Show me a sign, show me something, tell me what to do. Then He said, "If you dare come a little closer." This is the man she is with pulling her back in. She keeps second guessing their relationship and what they are doing but he pulls her back in again and again. "Round and around and around and around we go. Oh now tell me now tell me now tell me now you know" "Not really sure how to feel about it. Something in the way you move Makes me feel like I can't live without you. It takes me all the way.I want you to stay." She knows their relationship is not totally a positive one but she keeps coming back, something about him makes her keep going back to him and eventually tell him to stay again and again. "Oh the reason I hold on Oh cause I need this hole gone" That hole inside of you you feel when the person you love isn't there, even though she knows the relationship isn't healthy, she needs the pain to go away so she goes back to him" "Funny you're the broken one but I'm the only one who needed saving" I took this to be in reference to how everyone thinks Rihanna was the victim in the assault against her, but she feels she was responsible and that she broke him more than he "broke" her. "Cause when you never see the light it's hard to know which one of us is caving" This I think could mean one of two things. Either a reference to drug use, like when neither of you is ever sober it's hard to know which one is losing it. OR I think it could be referencing the public not knowing the truth of what goes on in their relationship so they really don't know which of them is really suffering. Anyway, that's my two cents. I love this song, it's just simply beautiful.
