It's about coke abuse... snow blind. Jonathan and Head have enlightened us re the endless number of 8 balls the band had been delivered when on tour. They also informed us about the resultant low self esteem side effect of the drug. Been there... done it...YUCK! Don't get caught in the trap children! |

I think this song is about adaptation within the confines of a relationship. "Every day it's something''... so very true, you know the drill, you come home from work each day, you have your mood ... she has hers and you learn soon enough that it's not all about happiness & sex. Good song ... very uplifting as we learn to give one another space in a relationship |

| I think that Jerry was trying to convey the message of, in the case of an addict, ''We pay our debt sometime'' is ultimately death. You keep puttin' those drugs into your body, you're sure to see an early grave (debt), we all know what happened in the end. | |
| Days of the New – Shelf In The Room Lyrics | 11 years ago |
|
When I was in my early twenties living with friends in a shared rent household, the shelf in the garage was always where the drug paraphernalia was. If anybody mentioned 'the shelf' you knew it was going to an all nighter. That's my interpretation |

| We pay our debt sometime = the dope will one day catch up to you...pay your debt, get clean or die. | |

This song can take you in alI sorts of directions, but to me it's about taking the wrong road or no road at all to a specific direction in life, i.e. lost opportunities, ''I shoulda woulda coulda but I didn't and now I have to live with the consequences of my action/inaction. ''All you'll be you are today'' at the end of the song emphasizes the point that it's important to make the best choices in life, not the most convenient ones which will likely come back to haunt you later in life when its too late to change course. And for the many of us who might not have taken the best courses in life who now feel a sense of loss and sorrow, open your eyes to the beauty that surrounds you, the little things that we take for granted. Take in the beautiful landscape, take a walk down to the lake or ocean side, visit a friend or family member you haven't seen in a long time, watch the sunset and yes, bathe yourself in a sweet sunshower. |

| Pearl Jam – Porch Lyrics | 11 years ago |

It's about not taking for granted the life of those people we love. Like Eddie said before playing this song in finale in concert in at least one of his shows, ''if you love somebody, tell em''. How miserable would you be if you came home from work for the day to hear the news about your spouse or close family member who for whatever reason took an unscheduled trip away from earth never to be seen again... how empty would you feel if you hadn't regularly told that individual that you love them? Younger people in general don't have as well developed of a sense of fate as do older people. All you need is a little taste of the fragility of life .... then you'll know better to live the moments and events in your daily life as if you're doing them for the very last time. |

| Alice in Chains – Sludge Factory Lyrics | 12 years ago |
| How about... Jerry is the narrator of the life and times of his friend and co-lead vocalist? That would seem to be the case in several AIC songs, ''Don't Follow'' to name another. Jerry was right there watching it all go down hill fast for Layne and Mike (Starr). In a sad sort of way, watching your best friends/bandmates slowly commit suicide while not being able to do a thing about it would seem to offer a lyricist, Jerry in this case, a great opportunity to release his fellings. AICfan1211 nailed it I think ^ | |

How clever was Layne? The Nuthin' Song does stick to my mouth like peanut butter on the brain, I can't stop singing the song to myself for several days after hearing it! It's as effective as a commercial jingle! It just goes to show how easily the human brain can be manipulated. :P |

| Mad Season – I Don't Know Anything Lyrics | 12 years ago |
| I forgot to add in my preceding response that Layne's response to those who were bugging him for interviews was likely, ''I don't know anything". | |
| Mad Season – I Don't Know Anything Lyrics | 12 years ago |

I believe the song is about what another members replied, Layne became reclusive and couldn't relate to the world around him. Additionally, I think the song is about all of the individuals who kept trying to contact Layne for interviews after he discontinued working with AIC, in refusing to accept any of the interviews he was bad mouthed by the publicity goons, hence (Why we have to live in so much hate every day?) The teacher with the ruler down on his hand and he laughed line is likely about Layne's feelings regarding figures of authority. |

''Hey, I ain't never coming home Hey, I'll just wander my own road'' Is an addict in denial when confronted about a substance abuse problem... "I...I don't have a problem, I'm feeling good... so good that I feel immortal. Really, I got it in control... mind your own business anyway, I.. I'll be just fine, nothing could harm me... watch.'' ''Hey, I can't meet you here tomorrow'' Is the affected subject not being able to follow through with his obligations in life b/c of his increasing substance abuse problem. ''Say goodbye don't follow Misery so hollow'' Are the thoughts and feelings of the narrator as he witnesses his close friend's substance abuse problem spiraling out of control. ''Hey you, you're livin' life full throttle'' Is the narrator's repeated/follow up attempt to make contact with his substance abused friend... to no avail as the subject simply ignores his confrontational friend and says, "Hey you, pass me down that bottle, yeah''. (the ''yeah'' is all about the subject being in denial of his problem) ''Hey you, you can't shake me round now'' FU, go away... stop preaching to me about my so called substance abuse problem... You know what? I don't f'in care about being in the band anymore if you're gonna look at me that way and talk behind my back.. .. ''I get so lost and don't know how, yeah'' This is the subject finally coming to his senses one day with the realization that he does in fact have a monkey on his back, but he's still in denial about it when confronted by those who love him. (Again, ''yeah'' is masterfully used to depict the subject's denial of his problem) ''And it hurts to care, I'm going down'' This is the narrator coming to grips with himself of the fact that his friend's substance problem has progressed to the point he can't possibly get said friend to see the light... it's a hopeless situation and said narrator knows it won't be a happy ending. ''Forgot my woman, lost my friends Things I'd done and where I've been Sleep in sweat the mirrors cold See my face it's growin' old Scared to death no reason why Do whatever to get me by Think about the things I said Read the page it's cold and dead Take me home (5x) Say goodbye Don't follow'' This is the substance abused subject sitting all by himself... he finally comes to grips with the fact that his confronting friends were right all along, the drugs are/were killing him. |
