The Birthday Massacre – Calling Lyrics 12 years ago
To me, this song is about regrets and life mistakes. (you'll have to forgive me, i'm rubbish at lyric interpretations but this is just my opinion and since no-one has commented and i thought i'd have a go anyway...)

"Come, take a look inside
What you've lost you'll find
What you want is right in front of you" - its like a friend consoling another, telling him/her that although they have made mistakes they can always change the future.

"Look, underneath the stairs
What's broken is repaired
Now there's nothing left behind
Nothing left of you" - its as if the person was trying to find something better in life and it seemed that for a short while, they felt 'fixed' but long term, the underlying problem has just been ignored or the underlying problem just got worse or led to further problems. So much so that, as a person, they felt consumed until nothing remained of the person before.

"Voices start to change
Faces rearrange
Eyes roll back and hands are pulling you down
They're dragging you beneath
Blood between your teeth (?)
You'll sleep when the shadow moves over your.." - Perhaps sugesting that their destructive behaviours are metaphorically (or literally with some addictions for instance) killing, haunting or attacking them, especially in their dreams.the last line reminds me of a line in Macbeth "life's but a walking shadow" which means that as humans we all have the same habits, fears and emotions and make the same mistakes, as many other humans that have lived before us.The only way they will learn to live happily is if they put the past behind them.

"Black eyes
I hear you calling out for me tonight
No rest for the soon departed
Black eyes
You won't be dreaming when you sleep tonight
I'll finish what you started" - The connotation of a black eye/s is that of a dishonored reputation. so the person feels that everyone is criticising them or judging them for their past mistakes. They feel exposed and totally humiliated. The person is consumed by their feelings and needs someone to rely on. They want to have their slate wiped clean so to speak so that they have no regrets when they pass away (or just later on in life). The penultimate line either suggests death or emptiness since everyone dreams at least once a night (we just simply forget them when we wake up). Or it suggest that the person is just going through the motions of life, trying to keep their mind off of whatever they had done wrong. The last line relates back to the line from shakespeare, that we all follow similar life patterns, full of similar mistakes and worries. But once we are dead, none of that really matters. And once we are dead, there is nothing we can do to change our past or future or our decendants' future.

"Eyes hiding in the hall
Hanging on the wall
Through this broken window
Feeling the cold distance of the moon
In this empty room
Now there's nothing left behind
And it's all because of you" - This paragraph highlights the persons paranoia, regret and loneliness. They believe that the choices they have made were selfish and hurt others and they believe no one cares about them anymore because of their mistakes. Their mistakes ruined their reputation.

"Cover your ears
You don't wanna hear
The whispers in the walls are making it clear
You're all by yourself
There is no one else
You'll sleep when the shadow moves over you" - Their mistakes ultimately lead to their downfall. They will continue to regret for the rest of their lives. They will rest once they pass away (or at least when they let go of their mistakes and learn to live for the future instead of dwelling on the past)

"Hands cover your eyes now that you realize
All the things you loved were never here
What's lost will be found buried underground
You'll sleep when the shadow moves over you" - Their mistakes cause them so much distress and sorrow and sadness, as they realise that what they relied on the most was just an illusion (?perhaps relating to some sort of addiction?) But one day others will hear of their story and that may prevent others from falling into the same trap.
