I kind of regret reading all of these interpretations before posting my thoughts because my explanation seems kind of lame. I used to think the song was just about some kooky events a weary traveler experienced. But as I got older realized there was a deeper meaning. I came to conclude that the song was about someone denied redemption based on the first verse. That is curious in and of itself because all people can be redeemed based on current Christian theology. So why was the narrator denied? Maybe because it was too late. By that, I mean the rapture was occurring and the faithful were departing the earth: Carmen is with the Devil. He wants to hang out with Carmen, but she can't because she has "to leave." so the Narrator has to decide if he is going to join the Devil's legion on earth. Luke is about to depart, but Annalee (a wife?, daughter?) like the Narrator has to remain. Apparently, Luke, who is concerned about Annalee's fate, asks the Narrator to look out for her. Same thing about Chester who has to leave his dog. So, the Narrator is left to ponder how he will endure the coming Tribulation. He can fight for God, and hopefully, be reunited with Miss Fanny who was evidently someone very close to him that was claimed via the rapture. |

| I always loved this song but wondered what "revolution" the writer is referring to. The song's meaning seems pretty straightforward as a disillusionment of the American Dream. So I wonder if the revolution is a mass withdrawal from society. | |

| If you listen to the demo version, you can hear a definite Stogges influence. Real cool song. | |

I always thought it was about a low-level knockaround guy or a snitch about to get whacked. I read that Johnny was pinched for breaking into a store, but they guy that identified him was killed shortly afterwards. I always thought this incident inspired the song. |
