I'm surprised no one has pointed out the powerful, goosebump-inducing part of this song: those sudden, loud orchestral chords. At first, it's not clear why they're there, except that Elbow used a similar effect on their first album. But towards the end of the song it becomes clear, and the first time I noticed it, it blew me away! He sings: 'The violets explode inside me When I meet your eyes Then I'm spinning and I'm diving Like a cloud of starlings Darling, is this love?' Immediately after the line "Darling is this love?" we get hit with that immense orchestral blast. And the answer is 'yes.' That is love! Love comes out of nowhere and knocks you down with it's beauty. That's what those musical explosions are: that feeling of being unexpectedly and overwhelmingly blown away by love, time and time again. And each time it's more satisfying. Listen to it with some nice headphones and see if you agree! By far their best song, in my opinion. These guys write love songs like no one else. |

I hear it as an homage to childhood best friends, separated in adolescence by differing perspectives, ambitions, and interests. Specifically, I like to think that it's about to two main characters in Ray Bradbury's Something Wicked This Way Comes. |
