This could be about a guy who never really took his relationship serious, until it was over. He could have also cheated on his gf. "Lost some buttons to my overcoat, Pull your knife away from my throat" I feel like him saying he lost some buttons, was just him trying to cover up hooking up with another girl. In reality, maybe some other girl ripped his jacket off and happened to bust off a few buttons. Losing one button, I can understand happening, but more than one tells me something is up. Especially after the song is in fact named "buttons. The whole knife to his throat part also shows some pretty intense anger coming from the girl in the situation. The guy here seems pretty unfazed about the whole thing, and seems to really realize what he lost when he looks back on it. "Take a look at what we had". Just my quick spin on it. |
