| The Flaming Lips – Suddenly Everything Has Changed Lyrics | 12 years ago |

I think in general this song is pretty self-explanatory, but I noticed a couple people here have misinterpreted its overarching theme, so I'll just add my two cents here: This song, like various other songs on the record, such as Feeling Yourself Disintegrate, is primarily about realizing you're getting older and getting nostalgic at intermittent moments, realizing how fast life has gone. It's about the fact that we often don't realize how much life has changed until we sit down and think about it. It's at the most banal moments within our lives that we realize how much has changed since our childhood, such as when we're doing the laundry. It's at these repetitious moments that we start to think more cosmically and in the context of our entire lives. This year, I turned 18, and it was surreal to think that I had finally reached the age of majority--an age that, in my childhood, seemed so distant. It sunk in this year that I was getting older, that being an adult was actually possible, and that it wasn't much different from being a child. But as I thought back to the euphoric moments I had experienced during my childhood, I realized that many things actually had changed. Simply driving down the road could elicit such thoughts, realizing that even the sky seemed different as I had gotten older. This entire album is amazing, because of how cosmically it views our lives and the world at large. This song is certainly one of its highlights. |

Despite the shortness of this song, it carries so much power. It came at just the perfect moment in my life--when depression seemed inescapable and I lost all hope at finding happiness in the future. This song showed to me that regardless of the apparent bleakness of our existence, love and closeness to other people will help us get through, because with other people we realize that we are all in this together. Sure, we may experience a lot of hell in our lives and this may make us seem that our lives are useless--that we should simply die already--but we must realize that our lives are valuable and the love we experience within it is the best thing a man could have. We must love everything in the world--the trees, the stars, everyone we meet--the entire experience!--because if we forget to love then we have lost the whole meaning of our lives to banality and repetition, or, worse, death. While we constantly are "feeling [ourselves] disintegrate," this disintegration should not feel like an hopeless demotivator but rather a catalyst for our success. Because we recognize that we are, indeed, disintegrating, it encourages us to make the most of our short, yet beautiful, existence. |

Those of you who claim this song is about a breakup are to some extent correct but you're thinking far too superficially. This song can be viewed in a much more cosmic context when you think about it with regards to growing older, maturing, and realizing that things are changing around you. You lose some of the love you used to have, yet you keep some of it. Some of your relationships last; others don't. You are happy at times and at others sad. This song is about remembering all of those moments, whether good or bad. And at the same time, it's about realizing that your life will continue regardless of your past, and you have the chance to entirely reinvent yourself if you so desire ("I think our lives have just begun.") The "I" in this song refers to you, yourself. The "you" refers to anyone whom you might love at any point, including your parents, romantic partners, or simply your most intimate friends. The "we" that this song refers to, then, refers to you and your loved ones. The song, then, becomes a song of perseverance--of using love to persevere despite all of the hardships you may experience. We should "fall away with" everyone whom we might love, because if we forget to love, our lives become meaningless. |
