Sarah, don't worry about posting your first impressions and then realising you wouldn't have said that if you had known the actual lyrics - you still did the forum a favour by providing a starting point.

... And I, too, first thought it's just a love song, or a song about leaving, maybe a one night stand, maybe a wife, whatever.

But a friend of mine pointed out that there's another dimension to this: it's likely not about wanting to leave this person, but primarily about wanting leave a narrow lifestyle:

"Find a job, find a friend
Find a home, find a dog
Settle down, out of town
Find a dream, shut it down"

And only secondarily, if the other person cannot make the same leap to leave the familiar, only then leave her (or him) as well.

Does this make sense?

Thanks for this, some solid words. However, I beg to differ on one point - when you say:

"I think he's using water as a symbol of something definite, inevitable. He wants to see his bad habits without any ego-defences such as repression or denial."

I would say by "water" he simply evokes the concept of an oasis (in the desert) - and, metaphorically, a source of truth (in the mentally arid arena of celebrities and back-slappers). So: I might have been momentarily blinded by fame and all that, but please take back me to the real world of my old friends. So my interpretation is more down-to-earth and concrete; I would say you are putting a needlessly psychological point on this.

What do you think?
