| Bill Callahan – Jim Cain Lyrics | 12 years ago |

i always heard 'in case things go poorly the night I return remember the good things I don't' I now think this is wrong but it stil think of this song as about someone who has been away and depressed for a long time coming home. |

| Dirty Projectors – Impregnable Question Lyrics | 12 years ago |

beautifully simple song. bit pedantic perhaps, but I've always listened to it slightly differently, without the '?' after the 'why': If there is ever the impregnable question of why what did or didn't pass? it would help to seek comfort in destiny but i really don't, we don't see eye to eye. I think this gives the sense of the first verse (and best, in my opinion!) better. I tend to think of this song as from the perspective of a guy whose relationship is breaking or has broken down. he says that you can ask questions about why things broke down, and it may help to think that it was 'fate', but thinking like that can't help him get over it. it's such a simple idea, but is conveyed so perfectly in that verse. |

I do think you can't help but conjure some kind of imagery of dispassionate sex from the first verse - 'I spent the summer on my back' but I've seen an interview with Annie, where she blushes at that interpretation and point to depression - I'm not sure that it crossed her mind. However I do think that image fits the mood of the song - floating through life in a detached and depressed state. Reading the rest of the lyrics here too, it seems clear it's about depression or similar. Definitely the feeling of meaningless of life and social interactions is clear. 'another attack' ---> panic/anxiety attack 'blue and red' ---> colour of pills / colours of sadness and anger 'dressing undressing for a wall, if mother calls...' 'tell the mailman never you mind...' 'stay in just to get along...' ---> feeling of not wanting to see anyone 'best finest surgeon come cut me open' ---> analogy with psychiatric help / wanting an easy fix to her depression / self-destructive imagery in any case, it is a brilliant song. |
