I can't believe no one has commented on this. Look up the acoustic version too; fucking incredible. He's writing about being nostalgic. For a place, for a situation, for a group of friends, or for a girl. The lyrics go from sad and depressing: "I'm stuck, my mind has been sinking for miles." To awesome hooks like: "Next time my finger slips I've gotta learn to grip this Till it hurts" "We'll make this better than before" I feel like he was really sad about growing up/moving and leaving his old life behind. Wrote this maybe as an anthem while he was trying to get out of a rut. Like a mantra. As in, "This song is sick with hope" The line: "I'm trying to say the words that mean the most I'm gonna leave them here to settle before I become A ghost" -hit me pretty hard. It's the goal of any musician. The human condition. To leave something behind for the world to see after you're gone. This guy is an incredible lyricist, imho. And the raw emotion in his voice and how it carried the song blew me away. This song describes my current situation exactly, so there's my biased opinion. |
