| The National – I Need My Girl Lyrics | 10 years ago |
| Definitely about missing your loved ones, wife, daughter, whoever that special girl in your life is. The older version listed here makes that quite clear with the "In a week we’ll be together/Try to call you when I’m landed" lines. | |
| Sublime – Wrong Way Lyrics | 11 years ago |
| It's about how people who grow up in shitty situations are never shown the "right way" to live: not fucking around, not getting mixed up with certain crowds, etc. and how that shapes them and likely repeats the cycle. Serious song that would be a depressing listen if it weren't Sublime's light musical tone throughout. | |

"I couldn't find quiet I went out in the rain I was just soakin' my head to unrattle my brain" - The person's thoughts are dominated by a person, assuming an ex that either left them or they were forced to split up, possibly from a move. "Somebody said you disappeared in a crowd I didn't understand then I don't understand now" - Someone trying to console a person's loss with the old "they weren't really that special anyway" thing. The person obviously disagrees with that sentiment. "Am I the one you think about when you're Sitting in your faintin' chair drinking pink rabbits? Am I the one you think about when you're Sitting in your faintin' chair drinking pink rabbits?" - Do you miss me, like I miss you? "And everybody was gone You were standin' in the street 'cause you were tryin' not to crack up" - They're outside in the rain now, alone with their thoughts. They're thinking of the conversation from before where the bad news was being given: they were going to have to separate. "It wasn't like a rain it was more like a sea I didn't ask for this pain it just came over me I love a storm, but I don't love lightning All the waters coming up so fast, that's right" - They're becoming extremely sad because of this memory. "Am I the one you think about when you're Sitting in your faintin' chair drinking pink rabbits? Am I the one you think about when you're Sitting in your faintin' chair drinking pink rabbits?" - Do you miss me, like I miss you? "And everybody was gone I was standing in the street 'cause I was trying not to crack" - Still outside in the rain, trying to hold back their tears. "I was solid gold I was in the fight I was coming back from what seemed like a ruin" - It's ambiguous as to whether this is immediate or later on. Assuming it's later on, this person had begun to heal and move on from the loss of their relationship. "I couldn't see you coming so far I just turn around and there you are" - As mentioned before, it's possible that their breakup was due to a move, and because of that distance they never expected to see or be with the person again. Then they show up unexpectedly. "I'm so surprised you want to dance with me now I was just getting used to living life without you around I'm so surprised you want to dance with me now You always said I held you way too high off the ground" - Pretty obvious, this person has come to see them. Their questions and doubts about this person missing them have seemingly been answered. "You didn't see me I was falling apart I was a white girl in a crowd of white girls in the park You didn't see me I was falling apart I was a television version of a person with a broken heart You didn't see me I was falling apart I was a white girl in a crowd of white girls in a park You didn't see me I was falling apart I was a television version of a person with a broken heart And everybody was gone You were standin' in the street Cause you were trying not to crack up" - I always picture this as an internal monologue in a film. The two are standing in front of each other, smiling, unsuccessfully holding back smiles and tears, while the character we've been following is thinking about how miserable they've been without this person. "Now I only think about Los Angeles when the sound kicks out Now I only think about Los Angeles when the sound kicks out You said it would be painless The needle in the dark You said it would be painless It wasn't that at all You said it would be painless The needle in the dark You said it would be painless It wasn't that at all (when the sound kicks out) You said it would be painless The needle in the dark (when the sound kicks out) You said it would be painless It wasn't that at all" - Given the past tense of this, it seems as though, in the end, the two end up together, away from Los Angeles. Still, the person remembers their break up and the time spent apart. "When the sound kicks out" (not sun) is referencing how they sought solitude and quite when they were sad and thinking about their break up, and they sometimes still think about it when they're alone. "You said it would be painless/ it wasn't that at all" is simply them thinking about how their significant other consoled them originally: that the split wouldn't be so bad. They were wrong, it was awful. It's an incredibly beautiful, sad, and euphoric song. Their best, I think. |

| *not be afraid of "where it's dark." They really need an edit feature. | |
| Kavinsky – Nightcall Lyrics | 11 years ago |

*Coin into a payphone* *Ringing* Ghostly voice: I'm giving you a night call to tell you how I feel I want to drive you through the night, down the hills I'm gonna tell you something you don't want to hear I'm gonna show you where it's dark, but have no fear *It appears this is a phone call to a girlfriend from a dead person. I picture a ghost possessing a payphone, but still ceremonially entering money into it...not that it really matters. The ghost goes on to tell the girl his feelings, and also that he's dead but that she shouldn't be afraid. It's up for debate whether this ghost wants her to die, too, or whether he's telling her to be afraid of "where it's dark," assuming that means death. Living girlfriend: There something inside you It's hard to explain They're talking about you boy But you're still the same *Living girl has likely seen the accident on TV or heard about it, but doesn't believe he's dead. She notices something slightly different in his voice during the phone call, that she can't pick out. Doesn't seem she picks up that she's talking to a dead person. It would appear this conversation took place soon after the fatal accident. |

| The National – Graceless Lyrics | 12 years ago |
| I don't think this really has any interpersonal relationship meaning. I think it's all about taking medicine to cope with whatever, depression most likely. They make him feel better but he hates how they affect him; he feels like someone else. He hates that he can't beat the depression without them. | |
| The National – Pink Rabbits Lyrics | 12 years ago |
| I think it's about a girl experiencing a swirl of emotions. I she was just dumped but is now getting attention from a boy she liked but didn't think ever noticed her. She's both devastated and excited at the same time. | |
| Dave Matthews Band – The Space Between Lyrics | 13 years ago |

Each line is stands on it's own, but the sum of them describe people in relationships. Favorite line: The space between the tears we cry is the laughter that keeps us coming back for more. I think it's pretty clear that the meaning there is: it's the good times (laughter) that outnumber the bad (tears) that keep people together. |
