I think it's about being able to talk about a difficult time in one's personal history without getting caught up in the emotions of the memory. "Now it flows from my mouth/Like a stroll down memory lane." What was once an emotionally charged topic can now be recited in a detached manner. |

I think the surfing is an allegory for dealing with trials and troubles of life. He says he needs a steady creed like a steady board. If you've got something to believe in, it's easier to meet the challenges of life. If you have a good surfboard, it's easier to conquer the waves. |
