The Avett Brothers – Vanity Lyrics 8 years ago
I think this song has a focus on the fact that there is a lack of focus. At least to something of any merit. When the singer says "I have a plan for the day" or "I have a tune I could play" or "I've got love pouring out of my veins," and follows with "but it's all vanity, it's all vanity," they are saying everything I am doing, planning, and dreaming is very superficial.

They most curious line I am unsure of is "call off the guards." Does it refer to our walls we put up to protect ourselves from hurt? "Their heads are chopped off and running in circles," so their focus, or true mission, is off and they can't see what really lies beneath the surface."

This is such an interesting song and I was disappointed to see no comments, so I hope more people take part because it's one of their more deeper, cryptic songs.

The Avett Brothers – Another Is Waiting Lyrics 12 years ago
When I saw the video, I thought I knew what they were saying. That this "rose, queen" of a woman was concerned with superficial beauty and she was going down a path to destruction. Yeah, I can see that. But then there's that line they keep repeating in the chorus, "Another is waiting, she isn't saying anything" and whenever you see that in a song, it holds importance.

Okay, and I just kept singing it in my head but wondering what the heck that could mean. The above interpretation and what they want you to perceive in the video just seemed a little conceived and trite for how deep and poetic the Avett's writings really were. I don't think that it's just another wannabe celebrity in the waiting room their talking about. Then I found out about the affair and it makes so much more sense! Jennifer Carpenter was silent for the longest time about her and Seth's affair even though she was wrecking his home unbeknownst to the public and their closest friends.

What if for a change people in the music business were able to be strong and value their marriages? I guess Scott did, good for him.

Lana Del Rey – Dark Paradise Lyrics 13 years ago
This song has a hidden meaning. On Wikipedia, it states that Lana has claimed a lot of her songs on _Born 2 Die_ are about the time period when she was suffering from alcohol dependence. This was at the tender age of 14. She went to a special school that helped kids with substance abuse problems from the age of 14-18. If you listen carefully, you might see this is her letting go of her addiction. After reading her quote, "alcohol was my first love" it puts this whole album in a different perspective.
