This is one of Alice's best ballads. The lyrics are just so honest and so vulnerable. He's asking for forgiveness for being "Hard Hearted Alice" who sometimes drinks more than he needs. He's saying it's OK to break his heart, just don't leave it. I think modern audiences may not understand the "until the TV's dead and gone reference." There was a time, not so long ago, when TV wasn't 24/7. They actually stopped broadcasting TV late at night. So if you fell asleep in front of the TV, you might wake up at 3 or 4am to black and white snowy vision on the television screen. LOL |

I believe this song is a, "Jesus save me from your followers" type of song. It seems to be a commentary on one of the hypocritical aspects of the American culture; gun in one hand and Bible in the other. It's a song about killing in the name of Christ and even glorifying that mayhem. |
