Five Iron Frenzy – Far, Far Away Lyrics 12 years ago
The first bit is all about the sense of loss the followers of Jesus had after he was crucified. At that time no one knew he would return from the dead. The fishing imagery is a reference to how Jesus found his fist few disciples, Peter and his brother, while fishing (and causing their nets to break from too much fish).

"Staring at the shoreline, wishing for some hope
The weight of empty fishing nets is more than twisted rope
And underneath stern faces, they wait with bated breath
With broken hearts from hoping while casting out their nets"

The next part is simply describing Jesus's return from the dead. Holes in his hand from when he was crucified, obviously, which he showed as proof to the Apostle Thomas who doubted him.

"See the figure on the shore
He speaks His words like plain men sing
His hands they still have holes in them
Glory to the King"

In the chorus, I can only imagine "far far away" to be heaven. Ringing with bells and singing, rejoicing at the return of Jesus.

"Can you hear the bells a-ringing far, far away?
Can you hear the voices singing far, far away?"

Peter was a liar for denying he was a follower of Jesus.

"And Peter was a liar, a traitor just like me
And Judas was a hypocrite, and Paul a Pharisee"

This part just repeats the same idea of hope returning with Jesus' resurrection. You could also interpret this to mean that Jesus is the Truth, and Jesus is Hope.

"When truth can be so distant and hope evades our reach
Peter swam across the water and found it on the beach"

I think the next part refers to the second coming. One day he shall come again, and we wont know when. The idea of him coming again as a "song" I think ties in with the chorus about "bells ringing" and "people singing", because his return in a joyous and wonderful thing.

"I know that one day soon a song shall rise
You’ll hear it with the sleep still in your eyes"

This last rather morbid ending refers to the future crucifixion of Peter for believing that Jesus is the Messiah.

"I hear they’ll hang you upside down stretched across two boards
For hearing distant voices and crossing to the Lord"

Gene Pitney – The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance Lyrics 13 years ago
If youre not aware of the movie, you may not know this, but there are actually three men being mentioned in the song.
Liberty Valance, the law-abiding man from the east, and the man who shot liberty valance.

While the gun duel was between liberty valance and and "stranger from the east", the "man who shot liberty valance" was a third man hidden from everyone's view. He had to step in to save the "easterner" who was sure to be killed, and also to end liberty's reign in the town.

With that in mind, I REALLY like the line "Everyone heard two shots ring out, a shot made Liberty fall"

can be interpreted in so many ways. :)
