This song has a very literal meaning for me. My mother suffers from alzheimer's - forgets names and faces. There are times I feel like I'm bending, breaking, suffocating... then there are 'good days'. I am her sole carer - I don't have a lot of time for the outside world - and it won' be until the worst happens that my own life will truly start. Don't begrudge it one bit, I'll always be there to meet her - whether it's in the morning, in the light, or on the other side, as she was there for me. |

I always hear the word 'you' not 'new'. There's a school of thought that believes a soul can be reincarnated after death into any person at any point in time (past, future or present). Karma becomes quite literal: if you inflict pain in this lifetime on someone else, you could be reincarnated as that person, and suffer the pain you inflicted. So, within that school of thought it becomes possible that you have lived in this century before: as your mother, your sister, a friend, or even Dave Grohl! Memories of previous incarnations aren't clear or vivid, but can come to us in dreams or in 'deja vu'. "Once upon a time I was somebody else In another life I saw myself Way back then, back when I was you" Anyway - my favourite line: "does my heaven burn like hell on you"... "I have a great life, that must make you feel terrible..." Great song! |

In my opinion, this song is about a relationship that got turned on its head. "You got away from me, now get away from me" The storyteller has been abandoned by a partner. The partner realises they made a mistake and wants to get back together with him, but the storyteller still feels bitter about the way the relationship ended and wants nothing more to do with her. "I couldn't grow just living in the shadow Where do you go when no one's following you? You ran away, ran away it was right on cue" Two possible things here: The partner left the storyteller because he wasn't successful... he was being overshadowed, and he had no one left who believed in him: she abandoned him the same time other people were abandoning him. OR The partner overshadowed the life of the storyteller, making him feel insignificant and alone. She abandoned him when he hit rock bottom. "False starts, young hearts get shattered Pick up the pieces coming down around you You ran away, ran away, it was right on cue" The storyteller had made a wrong choice, a false start, leading to his depression at the time. He hoped his partner would be there to help him through the bad times, but instead she left him. "Shall I go on and on?" Do you really want me to recall all the bad stuff that happened? "Truth ain't gonna change the way you lie, youth ain't gonna change the way you die" The partner had been lying to the storyteller throughout the relationship - maybe living a fast, promiscous lifestyle, that could result in an early grave. "You're part of me... please pardon me..." Despite the underlying bitter feeling, the storyteller acknowledges that this person is a big part of who they've become, and even feels a little sorry to be telling them the truth so bluntly. |

This is a song about the global economic crisis. Flowers wrote the track after being prompted by comedian Jimmy Carr, who told the singer "the next big breakthrough record" was going to be "about the problems of the economy". "Las Vegas was hit harder than any other place," Flowers said. "In my street there were eight or nine empty houses. There's an empty shopping mall near my house, this brand new complex, and nobody ever occupied it. It's a weird wasteland-looking thing. Dead palm trees. I guess that's where that song was born." Where Springsteen or Dylan would rail at the injustices done to the working man, Flowers, in line with his religion, takes a more compassionate view, singing: "Don't be afraid to knock on the door if you fall on hard times." |
