this song is comparing the people in the war being badly affected and even dying while in a completely different world, eg america, people have such easy lives compared to the people dying in the war but still complain. eg like a typical american girl- her looks are so important that she needs lipgloss, not to mention she has "glossy magazines" and a boyfriend and everything. and then boohoo she breaks up with her boyfriend and is really upset about it... ok, but in contrast, "momma's packing up on thursday cause bombs were dropping down all afternoon". we can get out of this song that we shouldn't complain so much about life because while some of us get depressed over little things like a broken relationship (ok, at times these situations aren't little but compared to people dying in wars, it's not as drastic) when people in another world- 3rd world, are dying cause of bomb threats the people who have more are too selfish and don't realise it. if only if we helped the people who actually have something worthy of complaint |

this song is about being swept away. she says so in a live performance in 2000 before she became famous. i guess it's also about making the most of your youth- not neccessarily with a boy but that could add to the wonders of this song :) |

"Remember the beginning Funny how the story ends Should never have looked so close (Should never have looked so close) I can see all your cracks " This may mean she regrets seeking too much knowledge or too much of something and doing so much in the beginning to get it, or find out about it. "remember the beginning" may be saying how all was going well and then "funny how the story ends" shows that the result was negative and probably unexpected. "should never have looked so close" i think this means that she shouldn't have looked so close. haha :) as in, shouldn't have tried so hard to seek what she wanted.. in other words, maybe, shouldn't have been too greedy? or naive? "i can see all your cracks" this may not neccessarily be said to another person. it may mean that now she realises what she's done and now can see all the flaws and bad things of the thing that she wanted so much |

I think it's got to do with her being the odd-one-out in ballet cause she didn't have many friends or something. she also doesn't have the "perfect" figure so she had many self-confidence issues as a young teen (12-16 years). But she was good at ballet so I guess people thought her life was all perfect (with her parents being rich and all) but inside, she had a lot of problems! I think maybe Little Mary is kinda like her alter-ego where her life goes towards a darker way than hers- she commits suicide! but vanessa carlton found her haven through music and now she's a musical artist!!.. .. . though her career is going nowhere-near as successful as it used to... |
