This great great song is all too obvious to me. It's about a woman that doesn't know what she wants and to this day, still doesn't know what she wants. She is narcissistic and the world is to revolve around her. Its a song about a pattern which is very clear at the end. "You're still the same old girl you used to be" City girls just seem to find out early How to open doors with just a smile A rich old man And she won't have to worry She'll dress up all in lace and go in style Late at night a big old house gets lonely I guess ev'ry form of refuge has its price And it breaks her heart to think her love is Only given to a man with hands as cold as ice Smiling and being "sweet" is the phony way she communicates and brings people into her world. She lures the right guy in (in this case he is RICH but it could be any number of personalities that are important for her) and she has what she wants for the time being. She needs the feeling someone is protecting her (refuge) but after a while the old guy realizes this chick is nutty and he probably says some things AGAINST her which she can't cope with - like get a job rather than just talking on the phone all day and feeling depressed. So she starts to "THINK" her love is given to a man as cold as ice so it gives her a reason to look elsewhere. So in the next versus she goes and cheats. On the other side of town a boy is waiting with fiery eyes and dreams no one could steal She drives on through the nice anticipating 'Cause he makes her feel the way she used to feel She gets the wanted attention that she so misses in her NEW relationship. This new person is so wonderful and all the feelings she remembers having in her "old" relationship are coming back. However what her narcissistic personality fails to understand is that these feelings (as nice as they are) will be temporary. Relationships grow and as beautiful as the guy thinks she is, telling her how wonderful and great she is everyday gets tiresome. Again, it's all about her and he will realize this in time or just become a doormat. She gets up and pours herself a strong one And stares out at the stars up in the sky Another night, it's gonna be a long one She draws the shade and hangs her head to cry Versus above, she is lost and needs help. Mental awareness day coming up might do her some good - I think it's Feb. 12th. She wonders how it ever got this crazy She thinks about a boy she knew in school Did she get tired or did she just get lazy? She's so far gone she feels just like a fool So above, she is still thinking about this and doesn't understand it (she never will unless she goes for hours and hours and hours... of counselling). The boy she thinks of My, oh my, you sure know how to arrange things You set it up so well, so carefully Ain't it funny how your new life didn't change things You're still the same old girl you used to be So this last versus above is how she is able to take the time and spend the effort to arrange the affair and mess everything up. She had a good life but she was never really happy however the really sad part is she never will be. "You're still the same old girl you used to be". When you have Narcissistic Personality Disorder, you can't be. |
