| If you listen to the lyrics, this song is about rising up from a destroyed city (perhaps after a war or natural disaster) and being positive amidst the pain and suffering. I love it! It's so positive and uplifting. I'll admit, at first, when I heard this as their new single, I was a little worried. But give it a few listens and study the lyrics and you'll see its a beautiful and great Coldplay song :) | |

Going with the whole French Revolution era, I think this song is supposed to be from maybe a monk in a monastery's point of view. "Yeah we were dying of frustration Saying "Lord lead me not into temptation" But it's not easy when she turns you on" - pretty self explanatory. Least favorite song on this album. Nonetheless, here's what I figure the song is trying to convey. "And the hardest part Was letting go, not taking part You really broke my heart" It wasn't hard taking part because the relationship was great with the girl, but letting go was hard BECAUSE it was such a great relationship. "I could feel it go down You left the sweetest taste in my mouth You're silver lining the clouds Oh and I wonder what it's all about" It was such a great relationship, but she broke his heart and him having to move on is bittersweet. "And everything is torn apart Oh and... That's the hardest part" For those of you who went through a breakup, you know how the hardest thing is how such a beautiful thing just got all messed up, you keep thinking it over and over wishing you had just done it differently but you can't change it now and it sucks. |

Another song that really resonated with me during a breakup "I dive in at the deep end You've become my best friend" This was exactly what I was going through, my ex had been my best friend, so losing him was doubly hard. "I wanna love you but I don't know if I can" This could be talking about when you really want to love someone, but youre afraid of being hurt. Either that or maybe when you really love your best friend but you're not sure if you could love them as a lover. "I know something is broken and I'm trying to fix it Trying to repair it any way I can" I was trying to fix the relationship so hard, thinking of anything I could do to fix things. "You and me are floating on a tidal wave together You and me are drifting into outer space And singing..." Simply beautiful poetry. 'Floating on a tidal wave' seems like an irony, like we're acting like everything is peaceful, but really, its a huge tidal wave about to crash... |

Chris said it was written for his wife Gwyn after her father passed away. So sweet and such a beautiful song. I wish I had a husband as amazing as Chris :) "When you're too in love to let it go If you never try you'll never know Just what you're worth." When I was going through a breakup with my ex, these lyrics struck such a comforting chord with me, because I was trying to help myself realize I could do so much better than him, so I had to let him go in search for a better guy that I deserve. |

To me, this song sounds like it is about pure love for a woman... But it also sounds like a song to Jesus. "Steal my heart and hold my tongue I feel my time, my time has come Let me in, unlock the door I've never felt this way before" This sounds like its about letting someone in, romantically into your heart, as well as sexually. But at the same time, it sounds like a man dying, and coming into Heaven. "Hold my head inside your hands I need someone who understands I need someone, someone who hears For you, I've waited all these years" Could be talking about the perfect woman... but also could be talking about meeting God in heaven. "In your tears and in your blood In your fire and in your flood I hear you laugh, I heard you sing I wouldn't change a single thing" If its a woman, it's just talking about all the things she goes through and its all bliss to him. If it's the Christianity take, it could be very literal. In your tears and in your blood, Christ's passion, in your fire and in your flood, old testament anyone? "For you I'd wait 'til kingdom come Until my days, my days are done And say you'll come and set me free Just say you'll wait, you'll wait for me" Either telling his woman he'll wait for her forever (like maybe a guy in prison?) Or just expressing how undying his love is... Or for the Christian message interpretation, he's talking about purgatory or earth or whatever it is... I think the whole first half of the song is just like a general ode to all those people who are alone/without love "My song is love Love to the loveless shown And it goes up You don't have to be alone" And then the second heart is more direct, to the girl he loves. "And I'm not gonna take it back And I'm not gonna say I don't mean that You're the target that I'm aiming at But I'm nothing on my own Got to get that message home And I'm not gonna stand and wait Not gonna leave it until its much too late On a platform I'm gonna stand and say That I'm nothing on my own And I love you, please come home" This is to the girl he loves... he's not going to let her go without proclaiming his love, even if he gets rejected, he wants her to know. (Favorite part of the song, by the way. So much emotion) |

I love this song. Here's what I think it was all about, though its one of those songs that can resonate with a lot of love situations I think. Anyway. A warning sign I missed the good part, then I realized - This refers to when you miss the best part in a relationship, I think. The love and butterflys in the beginning I started looking and the bubble burst -When he started overthinking the relationship, it ruined the happiness. I started looking for excuses - Started looking for a reason to end the relationship. Come on in I've gotta tell you what a state I'm in I've gotta tell you in my loudest tones - yelling That I started looking for a warning sign When the truth is I miss you Yeah the truth is That I miss you so - he really misses her. A warning sign It came back to haunt me, and I realized That you were an island and I passed you by When you were an island to discover - after everything had ended, thinking it over, he realized what a treasure he lost And I'm tired I should not have let you go - wants her back, realizes what he lost.
