I believe that the first verse is about a recent break up (Mick) and how she is getting used to them being apart 'Every day you do not come Your softness fades away' Although shes coming to terms with being apart you can tell by the chorus that she is still hurting and not over it. The second verse is like she is reminising on a old break up were she felt the same way that she does now (Lindsey) reminising on how the break up ended and how she delt with it badly, 'I did not deal with the road And I did not deal with you I know' though she will always love him 'Though the love has always been' 'So I try to say good-bye my friend Id like to leave you with something more But never ever been a blue calm sea I have always been a storm' Shes tried to be calm in the situation but she can't cause thats just not her maybe she would like to be on good terms with him but she is just to affected by the break up for it to end 'calm' with no hard feelings. 'We were frail' this could be referring to her and mick it was a 'frail' relationship because it was an affair She said "every night he will break your heart" maybe a friend had told her to stay away as they knew it was risky 'I should've known from the first Id be the broken-hearted' broken-hearted as he left her for sara 'But I loved you from the start Not all the prayers in the world could save us' shes always loved him but theres nothing she can do now because hes with sara |

Its clearly about her son zion! This song is so beautiful! How she chose to ignore anyone who told her not to keep the baby and realised that he was the best thing that has ever happened to her in her life as she says 'I've never been in love like this before' This is my favorite Lauryn Hill song ever! |

I believe that the lyrics 'Blow out all the candles' mean this boy is trying to make it romantic by lighting candles for her but really she can never be that way with him when she says 'Cause we both know I'll never be your lover' its like she is saying we both know were never going to be together so stop trying to make something were not by lighting the candles (just blow them out), 'Company under cover Filling space in your sheets' its obvious this is just sex and nothing else. I love this song so much Daughter is an amazing band and i love her voice. |
