| Lorde – Team Lyrics | 10 years ago |
|
I believe this song is about menstruation. Lorde is singing about how vital a period is, though potentially taboo and disgusting. 'Wait 'til you're announced We've not yet lost all our graces The hounds will stay in chains Look upon your greatness and she'll send the call out Send the call out' Lorde is showing some frustration towards her period in this verse. She wants it to stay back until it's convenient. She wants to retain some of her grace and femininity and her period be on her timeline. She's ordering it to 'stay in its chains' and to 'wait until its announced.' The vagina is the greatness and she wants the period to keep from staining it until its time, but she knows this is ultimately fruitless and her period runs the show, not her. 'We live in cities you'll never see onscreen Not very pretty, but we sure know how to run things Livin' in ruins of a palace within my dreams And you know we're on each other's team I'm kind of over gettin' told to throw my hands up in the air So there' The period obviously resides in the private parts of a woman, so they're not going to be broadcast. They aren't pretty, but they know how run a woman's menstrual cycle and keep her ticking like she should anatomically. While she's on her period her vagina is useless and gross so it's a ruin of the 'palace' it normally is, but above all, she knows he period helps her and is on her team. But she's totally having to treat it like a big deal and put out all this effort every month for it, she's tired of being told by her period to maintain it. 'So all the cups got broke Shards beneath our feet But it wasn't my fault And everyone's competing for a love they won't receive Cause what this palace wants is release' This is referring to guys vying for sex while she's on her period. She's hurting them and pissing them off by rejection but they're competing for something they can't have while she's on her period. But her vagina and herself just wants release from the constriction of her menstrual cycle and she's frustrated. 'I'm kind of over gettin' told to throw my hands up in the air So there I'm kind of older than I was when I reveled without a care So there' I felt the need to point out she adds the 'reveled without a care' to the aforementioned line here. She is tired of having to deal with her period but she's also grown up enough to know it's important. |

| Capital Cities – Safe and Sound Lyrics | 10 years ago |

I believe that this song is about menstruation. The person in the song could either be a tampon or a pad. 'I could lift you up I could show you what you want to see And take you where you want to be' This is referring to how a tampon or pad can keep your period at bay and let you go wherever you want to go, just like you could do normally. It'll keep your embarrassment back and let you be you 'You could be my luck Even if the sky is falling down I know that we'll be safe and sound We're safe and sound' See above interpretation, this is pretty much a continuation of the above thought. 'I could fill your cup You know my river won't evaporate This world we still appreciate You could be my luck Even in a hurricane of frowns I know that we'll be safe and sound (safe and sound) We're safe and sound (safe and sound) We're safe and sound (underground) We're safe and sound (safe and sound)' This is referring to filling up a diva cup. Obviously the 'river won't evaporate' while you're on period because it's just going to keep coming and you're going to have to stem the tide. Your tampon is reassuring in this verse and throughout the chorus that it'll keep you normal. 'I could show you love In a tidal wave of mystery You'll still be standing next to me' I think we all know what this is referring to ;) |

| CHVRCHES – The Mother We Share Lyrics | 10 years ago |

I believe that 'The Mother We Share' is referring to menstruation and she is singing to her period. 'Never took your side, Never cursed your name I keep my lips shut tight Until you go oh oh oh We've come as far As we're ever gonna get Until you realize, That you should go' This part is fairly straightforward. She hates her period but it is a part of her and it is part of her individuality so she's not going to 'curse it'. She keeps her 'lips' shut tight, meaning her vaginal lips to keep the discharge at bay when she's out and about and also she doesn't have sex during her time of the month. 'Until you go' refers to how the discharge eventually comes out and sometimes you can't stop it and leak, particularly if you wear pads instead of tampons. 'I'm in misery where you can seem as old as your omens And the mother we share will never keep your proud head from falling The way is long but you can make it easy on me And the mother we share will never keep our cold hearts from calling' The chorus is perhaps the most obvious allusion to menstruation. She's in misery because she suffers from PMS and menstruational cramps and pain. It's also a double meaning because a period means you're not going to be a mother, so the mother we share is the relief and pain of not being a mother at all. And getting your period indicates you are not going to have a child, it's keeping a child from your cold heart and you won't have to be forced to love or involve yourself with offspring. Until the night falls, We're the only ones left I bet you even know, Where we could go oh oh oh And when it all fucks up, You put your head in my hands It's a souvenir For when you go-o-oh Refers to at the end of the night, there's no sex so she's by herself with her period. And when it all fucks up is referring to when there's leakage and she has to change her tampon. That tampon is left as a souvenir for when her period leaves she can always remember it and start the cycle anew next month. |
