| All sorts of meanings. The direction of flow of river is always one way, like time, and the river has no choice in this regard, but to merge with the ocean losing its identity as also it's freshness and its purity, in lines like, "Water turns cold and ..". All of us are born innocent but die guilty. The boat is suggestive of a rescue vessel or ship, some kind of a savior leading it's passengers to shores of safety battling and weathering the storms in their life, but eventually the ship also has to retire and be broken and torn down and has to go the way of the river, in lines like, which is sad , expressed in lines like, "Cause she has won so many battles that I hate to see her loose". | At the end of the day Bohemian Rhapsody would be an appropriate title for it. This is the distinctive feature of most of the songs by Freddie and Freddie made no secret of it, or offer any excuses for it. They are just a sort of a catalog , a description, a narrative and an expression of his life experiences and the emotional impact they had on him, and the impressions they left on him some of them perhaps a bit more deeper and lasting, maybe even leaving an indelible mark on him, while others just fleeting, temporary and not as pleasant and memorable, in a lyrical or a poetic form. They were never meant to be intellectual and highbrow, always only mellow , low-key. Perhaps it is tied in with his deep seated belief that a song is primarily meant to be sung, and heard, but not meant to be analyzed and picked apart. Having come of a bit of age, I do not completely agree with this philosophy or point of view and attitude to all things in life in general at all, be it to music or to science or to anything else whatsoever, cause life and love always do have a deep and a profound sense of meaning and purpose to them even if all we ever really do is wade on the surface, or as they say skim the surface and swim in the shallows, never explore it's hidden depths to come by it's real and it's true meaning and it's true purpose. This would explain why if not this band exactly but almost all popular bands have a lot of rooters, hooters and band wagoners for them and an almost religious and a cult following to them. Like almost everything else in this world, they are not the real deal, just another cosmetic and artificial phony. | |

I just came across this quote, by none less than Oscar Wilde himself which perfectly describes the songs of queen. If a work of art is rich and vital and complete, those who have artistic instincts will see its beauty, and those to whom ethics appeal more strongly than aesthetics will see its moral lesson. It will fill the cowardly with terror, and the unclean will see in it their own shame. Brian may also attests to what freddie said of his own compositions, that it was always open/subject to interpretation by the listener. |

| As a kid when I went to the beach, and gazed intently at the sea, the waters would appear to be green. I am not sure whether green means money alone because there is plenty of greenery in nature, or what is left of it. Incidentally, I still recall watching waves, small ones like ripples lap into the shore from various angles, different directions. Whenever they collided I always thought they would sort of crash and disintegrate, but I was surprised and thrilled to find that they would always merge and reemerge and continue along their course as if nothing had happened. A wave is first and foremost not just an abstract trigonometric or periodic function, but a real physical entity with a crest and a trough, although math can hope to capture and model some characteristics or aspects of it, to the extent possible, but just by remembering what I saw, I can say with absolute certainty, the waves in reality neither know about nor care to obey the law of the integral of Fourier series. | |

It instills me, a hopeless under-achiever, with hope. It says that a sedate yet selfless lifestyle (Bread and butter for a smile) is perhaps more exiting, fulfilling and gratifying than an ambitious, yet pompous and selfish lifestyle (I Loved a million women in a belladonic haze and I ate a million dinners brought to me on silver trays). There is no way of getting around this profound yet deeply personal realization of the truth, I guess. Admittedly show-men yet it is to their resounding applause that all the members of Queen have at least musically done a great service not only to music itself but also to their fans and to the industry as well. |
