I also got the 'prostitute' vibe from the song. It feels like in the first verse he's merely a kind stranger trying to 'give a girl a break' as it were, but that kind of feels too random to me. (Someone else here mentioned that he could be speaking to an old friend who is now a prostitute, feels like this could work too.) The part where Mercer says "Let me buy an hour" is almost like a pittance to this poor girl he's trying to better understand. It could almost be seen as an insult were it not coming from such a place of kindness. But taken less literally, it could almost mean meeting up with an old friend for coffee to catch up. The second verse sounds like he's describing a typical night for her. (This is the part that makes me question the prostitute theory.) When he says "waiting for your man" it makes me wonder who ('caller', pimp, boyfriend?) and it almost makes the whole song seem about this poor girl's life, so fraught with disappointments that she's become numb to it. You don't have to be alone to be lonely. |

Don't know if its already been said, but to me it sounds like she's exacting her revenge on the girl with one eye for sleeping (or attempting to sleep with) the main character's love interest. I believe that the first verse of the song indicates their meeting. When she talks about the "pretty little thing" stopping her 'in her tracks' I believe she is referring to her revelation that the girl was sleeping around with her husband. I think that the second verse refers to the main character literally getting revenge for what she did. When main character says "get your filthy fingers out of my pie," she is warning the girl to stay the hell away from her lover. Anyways, Florence rocks ^_^ |

| i totally agree! i feel like there's definitely something wrong with the singer's object of affection. "Tuesday, Wednesday, stay in bed" kinda leans in that direction. I almost feel like its a hopeless kind of love, one he cannot escape and one that she is unable to fully reciprocate. | |

It's about the Lolita. It's about her being moody and bratty. She is so cruel to him. She claims to hate him, she breaks his heart and just like that, she's in his arms again. Also the line "Always take a big bite/ It's such a gorgeous sight/ To see you eat in the middle of the night" Reminds me of the scene when Humbert happens upon Lolita sitting in front of the open fridge, eating. Anyways, just my take. Might've been said before, sorry bout that. |

Wow, so pretty ethereal lyrics. I think its interesting that one of the first things that is said mentions finding a place to go without city lights. It would imply somewhere rural lacking in modern technology yet he then goes on to draw direct comparisons between people and broadcasts. I would say that the feel I get from this song is one of desperation to get away from everything and everyone but his love interest. It sounds like emotionally, they may be having a hard time connecting ('Am I reaching you?') and the narrator is afraid that his love interest is going to realize that they haven't been able to reach each other for sometime and that she is going to leave him ('One day you're going to leave this shell...'). Also, 'our folly's the seam'? Seriously skilled songwriter. |

I don't know if this has been said already, but I think that when he says "Don't fucking move", he may literally be talking about her moving away from Indianapolis (this theory would make sense if his reference to east Japan was a literal one; it also fits with the line about this being written on an airplane). It obviously has multiple meanings, I just think its interesting to explore the possible different context especially when he says "Then somebody moves And everything you thought you had has gone to shit Well, we've got a lot Don't ever forget that" So I definitely agree with nluken, I think this is about a long-distance relationship where one party is desperately trying to maintain a connection the other party is seemingly ready to let go. |

| God, I feel the exact same way! I love that it's only because of her love and undying devotion to him that he is even able to continue on. Thanks for that! | |
