It’s about unenlightened self interest or ‘sin’. At an addictive level. Ends justify means etc. making poor short term decisions based on anger, lust, greed. It’s a form of behavioural short circuit - hence do it again. |

There was a tension in the band between Gouldman/Stewart and Godley/Creme. Godley and Creme thought the band was becoming too commercial and poppy. This appears to be gouldmans tongue in cheek and slightly self effacing riposte - based on a phrase his dad used a lot. |

It was a ruse John saying it's not about lsd. Anyone who has taken it and listened to this knows otherwise.
He insisted though, stating 'she said she said' was his acid song. One of his acid songs more like. |

We are prisoners here of our own device. - if the song was about literal hell this line wouldn't make sense! It's about the hell we make for ourselves by abandoning our ideals for a fair pay cheque. |

For lit up a candle read gave him a line of coke. Immediate ego gratification at a high cost.
In the masters chambers (boss, record exec etc) gathered for the feast - contracts - money- cocaine - but it's never enough to satisfy. just can't kill the beast- the beast being the ego. |

Seems to me this song is about idealism being sucked away by materialism. The drug connection is there too. Being idealistic is hard work, living The hippie ideal meant frugal living. Halucegens and cannabis - the 60s drugs could also lead to burn out.
The promise of riches and fame is the shimmering light. Cocaine and alcohol the new drugs (high addictive qualities) once enmeshed on this new world the seeming glamour becomes less attractive and the addictive quality of materialism and hedonistic drugs becomes more and more apparent as does the underlying desperation and futility of this lifestyle |

I think this is about desensitising through relationship abuse to the point that the abuse no longer really bothers you. In fact he is saying as the one who is abusing is the one who is really going to suffer. ' all the mannequins eyes do they all look like mine?' He has no feelings left. The song is saying 'Come on do your worst!'
