COG – Are You Interested? Lyrics | 10 years ago |
Surely it's about the Howard-era "anti-terrorism" laws that are highly draconian, and could easily catch normal people who were operating well within the normal bounds of civil discourse. |
Karnivool – Headcase Lyrics | 10 years ago |
It's about the end of a relationship - the other person is drifting away and he's sick of the slow seperation. The song is both lamenting the end of the relationship, and wishing for it to be ended swiftly and cleanly. |
Helmet – Turned Out Lyrics | 10 years ago |
Turned Out is about poverty tourism - the well schooled, well-heeled person pretending that they're living rough, just for their image. It has the derisive attitute toward fake personas, which is a common Helmet theme. |
Helmet – Give It Lyrics | 10 years ago |
You know... I've been loving this song for 22 years, and I've just realised that it could be about the USA's habit of bringing 'freedom' to the rest of the world. I wouldn't bet money on it, but it fits better than anything else I've thought of in the last two decades... |
Helmet – Ironhead Lyrics | 10 years ago |
Its particularly abstract, but its about wrestling with conflict and choosing to withdraw. |
Karnivool – We Are Lyrics | 10 years ago |
Definitely changes from "the worst day..." to "...the first day...". To me, the change shows a realisation that this is actually the first time he's had to stand and witness, despite what he previously thought. |
Karnivool – Fade Lyrics | 10 years ago |
...the betrayal hurts more than never making the promise in the first place. |
Karnivool – Fade Lyrics | 10 years ago |
It's about the pain of realising that someone close has not delivered on their promise to support him. |
Luscious Jackson – Naked Eye Lyrics | 10 years ago |
It's about ending a bad relationship - there's nothing about remaining in it. The naked eye is the clarity of realising that the relationship was bad. "Wearing nothing" and "feel's alright" are about the comfort of being out of the relationship. |
Veruca Salt – Seether Lyrics | 10 years ago |
I always thought this was about suppressed sexual desires - all of the stuff about her temper makes sense, too. But the line in Volcano Girls also points to the Seether being her sexuality. |
Karnivool – Aeons Lyrics | 10 years ago |
Isn't it about his guilt/doubt in abandoning god and (particularly) the idea of heaven? First two verses are basically creating the sense of unease/dissatisfaction/unhappiness. Third verse begins with the hope that god can make it all better, but finishes by directly doubting god. Fourth verse is lamenting his new-found awareness [VERY common Karnivool theme]. Fifth is cutting free - essentially "You know what? I'm done! I'm letting go of the whole notion of heaven". Then there's a return of some self-doubt, before the song ends with a definant/indifferent mantra of "when its over, its over". |
Birds of Tokyo – Silhouettic Lyrics | 11 years ago |
I always took this song to be about HER success and them growing apart. Could be his success, though. I don't think the "red light" reference is literally about prostitution - it seems to be more about the emotional disconnect that comes from the work/success. |
Jane's Addiction – Had a Dad Lyrics | 11 years ago |
It's about feeling abandoned by god, and being disillusioned by this, rather than "God is dead". The phrase "Gone away" is repeated throughout the song, clearly suggesting that god has made a choice. The lyrics quote Nietsze, but then immediately contradict the quote ("He's not dead at all"). |
The Sugarcubes – Deus Lyrics | 11 years ago |
The female vocal is fantasising about a with sexual relationship with god. This idea begins ambiguously ("He wants to reach me") but becomes more explicit as the song progresses ("He wants to touch me" and then "must taste the forbidden fruit"). I've neve been sure about the male vocal. It's either a counter-point to the female vocal (that god is cool and classy), or it's a much more subtle version of the female vocal (the sexual connection between god and people). |
