I'm going to take the lyrics from Genius as authoritative, but this site already has comments on the song. The throughline that I can make fit is a take on Christian cosmology. The creator, in the first verse, makes humanity, then later allows the sun to grow cold and everything to die, with the promise of bringing us all back in a mass resurrection. The tone of the song is intimate and menacing. I hear some resentment towards the divine authority. |

I read somewhere, I no longer remember where, that the name comes from a sign one of the band members saw. It advertised the last flower stand on the way to the hospital. I also don't see anything in the lyrics about illness, but for me the mood of the song kind of mirrors how I might feel seeing someone profiting off of others' misfortune that way - not exactly angry, but kind of disappointed in the world. Thom seems to be perpetually depressed and this song reminds me of me in some regards. I see "stepping on people's toes/snot nosed little punk" as directed inwards, seeing himself as being too self-centered but still just wanting to talk without being interrupted. |
