Bon Iver – Holocene Lyrics 13 years ago
I'm not sure about the the actual meaning of this song, but to me, when I hear this song, I think about all the times I have lay under the stars. When I'm thinking of all the possible worlds and life out there, the infinity of space beyond our sky. And I realise how insignificant I am to the universe. If I was to die, yes people would be affected emotionally, but it would not have an impact on the universe, science, or anything. I'm not emotionally unstable or depressive or anything, but this is just how I feel whenever I look at the billions of stars and wonder about the past, present and future of everything. 'At once I knew I was not magnificent'.

Mumford & Sons – White Blank Page Lyrics 13 years ago
I could be completely wrong, but to me this is the words of Marcus after the girl he unconditionally loves has left him for another guy. Marcus does not believe that the new guy is genuine and really loves the girl, and thinks that he just wants her for sex, 'can you lie next to her and give her your heart as well as your body.' Marcus questions whether the guy can 'kneel before the king and say 'I'm clean'' i.e. does the guy feel as though he has 'sinned' for taking a girl away from somebody who completely loves her (maybe they even committed adultery which is a sin in the Christianity). Now he turns to the one he loves fully, the girl, and asks 'where was my fault in loving you with my whole heart?' I believe many people can relate to this beautiful line. He is asking how his unconditional love was not enough for her that she felt she should leave him for somebody else. Why would you leave somebody who loves you more than they love themself, for they love you with the entirety of their heart (relates to so many heartbroken people, or victims of unrequited love). The second part of the song then addresses his rising anger in how she could leave him. He has so much to say that he cannot even write the words down on his 'white blank page'. He feels himself burning as his tension rises with his realisation of her wrong doing, 'swelling rage'. She used him to satisfy her own needs, 'attention', but didn't want to accept his 'affection', his devotion for her. He feels hopeless as he lost himself in giving so much of himself to her that he forgot he matters as well (if you noticed my Ernest Hemingway reference then I respect you). I'm not entirely sure about the final line, 'lead me to the truth and I will follow you with my whole life', but I think it may refer back to his religious ideas (as do most Mumford & Sons songs). I think he is turning to the God he believes in, and asking him to help him develop his own faith. Maybe he will follow God his whole life because he has realised how selfish humans are, and how hard love is. He has given up on love for people, only love in his God.

This is just my personal interpretation. I understand that this song can provoke so many thoughts and wonders, and so I know my version of events will be completely unique to your own, but it doesn't make this song any less meaningful to anybody. These beautiful lyrics are poetry, and poetry affects every single person in a million different ways.

The Smiths – Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me Lyrics 13 years ago
This song, to me, is a simple cry of loneliness.

He had a dream that somebody loved him, simply. He dreamt that somebody held him in their arms, simply. However, when he awakes he realises the dream was 'just another false alarm', and nobody needs to be interested in what he's saying because nobody is in love with him. There is 'no harm' as he is used to this morning disappointment, so he isn't emotionally damaged by the misery of waking alone. For the same reason, there is 'no hope', for he is used to these wonderful dreams not becoming reality and so he won't let himself hope it will really happen.
In the second part of the song, however, he becomes more desperate. He has forgotten what he previously said about 'no hope', as he now asks anyone and everyone who will listen to his cry, 'how long before the last one?' meaning the last wonderful dream which creates morning disappointment, in simpler words, how long before he actually finds someone to love him in reality. Then, 'how long before the right one?' he asks which dream which will come true, who will I dream about that will become my real love? 'The story is old but it goes on', he has been alone for a long, long time, but it doesn't feel like it's going to change, this loneliness will continue.

Morrissey and Marr have both named this their favourite Smiths song, and I completely understand why.

The Smiths – Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want Lyrics 13 years ago
Personally, this song is about the desperation to fulfil personal desires, whether it be the desire for love, a close friendship, or anything. He has lived a life full of disappointment and maybe despair, which could 'make a good man turn bad'. And for once he is having a 'good time', which is a wonderful surprise as he is so used to misery, possibly caused by neglection, rejection, or anything negative. Now he is finally experiencing something slightly happy, he wants it to continue and not be taken away from him, 'please let me get what I want this time', he's pleading for steady, consistent, lasting joy. The repetition of 'please' just emphasises his desperation and his pride being lost to simply begging for happiness. He is now almost content with disappointment that he doesn't dream anymore or gain ambition, 'haven't had a dream in a long time', further proving that he now unknowingly craves happiness (that may seem completely contradictory but I hope you understand what I mean).

Is happiness not a right to us? Doesn't everyone deserve joy? This song relates to many people in how we can actually lose ourselves in trying to maintain happiness. We can lose pride, dignity, self-respect, in order to carry on facing the world.

James Blake – Enough Thunder Lyrics 13 years ago
Personally I feel that this song is about a heavily weak relationship. The couple are in love, but as the relationship breaks down due to lack of trust/honesty and presumably other common factors, they feel no emotion and 'none of us are crying'. They don't want the relationship to end as they don't want to give up, 'no one pulls out here', however, as they feel no emotion they know inside them that the relationship is supposed to end, and so they 'hope for heartbreak' which will make them more determined to maintain their relationship. But as no heartbreak occurs, the couple are just staying in a relationship so they can say that they tried to keep the relationship going, even though their own lack of feelings assures them they must 'pull out' and give up.
