My connection to this song is through my own experience. The first line in particular. "I lost my leg like I lost my way So no loose ends Nothing to see me down How are we going to work this out" I fell in love with a girl last year and almost immediately after had a severe knee injury (couldn't walk for 3 months) I withdrawaled from school, moved home away from her, and was left directionless. Dreams aren't bad, I had turned back I love the girl But God only knows it's Getting hard to see the sun coming through I love you But what are we going to do I interpret this as the instantaneous disconnect between us and the sense of complete inability to fend for myself or provide anything to the relationship; although I would constantly be finding new inspiration from dreaming about her. Picture on the dreamer I'll take you deeper Down to the sleepy glow Time is a low. Don't you know What are we going to do The first line here makes me think of her. She is a dreamer and I picture her. The next two lines make me think of the blissful sleepy glow you feel when near. Then the rest of the lines are dismal afterthoughts. When you go back All the second selfless days You're in love with him I want to see you again I love you But what are we going to do Ultimately, I see this as hope, but without direction. Now, we're together, my knees getting better, and i truly couldn't have done without her or the Gorillaz!! |

I believe this song is about the beautiful things in life are 'laughed at', 'twitched off', and ultimately ignored. The nod to the canon, I believe, means the destruction associated with ignorance ~ either destroying relationships with other people because you refuse (laugh at/ twitch off) to see the beauty in understanding or missing the delicate balance of our planet earth! Wonderful song :) |
