This song is very definitely about Sting's father. The entirety of the album in many ways is: http://sting.com/discography/index/album/albumId/17/tagName/studio_albums The shortest synopsis is that Sting had a difficult relationship with his father. He didn't deal with the death of his father, which he says gave him writer's block for several years. So generally, this song is about coming to terms with the complicated emotions inherent in death, loss and grieving; even if you didn't have a good relationship with the parent, they were still a parent. Keep this in mind and reread the last major lines (also the emotional peak on the song): Why should I cry for you? Why would you want me to? And what would it mean to say, That I loved you in my fashion? |
