Antony and the Johnsons – Hope There's Someone Lyrics 8 years ago
A truly depressing dirge that could be seen as shamelessly self-indulgent depending on your state of mind. Clearly the guy has some issues about dying and his head is messed up with notions of his soul / heaven + hell etc. The basic premise appears to be Antony has a morbid obsession with the thought of snuffing it, and even worse for him, snuffing it alone. Now depending on your character some folks might find themselves rigid with fear at this prospect, while others might see it as their chosen setting for checking out of this world. I prefer to console myself with the idea that death is as much a part of life as being born is. Even when I'm not in any relationship I dont feel alone as I've had several female loves in my short life and I dont feel the need to cling onto any for a security blanket. I'm content to appreciate the great times I've had in my life and the wonderful love I've shared with my girlfriends, I know that many people will never find any love in their life which is tragic, I've been lucky enough to have experienced love several times and for that I am grateful and I'd feel ungrateful if I were to not feel this way. As for feelings of lonliness then I can only say it how I feel which is that I never feel alone and I enjoy my own company (sorry if that sounds weird or anti-social), I'm not a sociopath by any means, but I think its important to like yourself if you wish to love anybody else otherwise your relationships are likely to suffer from your self-loathing / insecurity.

New Model Army – Green And Grey Lyrics 9 years ago
This track speaks to me personally as I actually come from the Leeds / Bradford area where New Model Army started as a band. Living in West Yorkshire you are always surrounded by the valleys of green and grey - green for the wood and grass covered hills and grey of the soot marked stone that is commonly used to build the local mills / buildings and terraced houses.

Yes even now in small town West Yorkshire, places like Bradford, Huddersfield, Halifax, Morley, Batley you can get your head kicked in by the locals on a Friday night for having hair longer than the approved length, still get called a 'poof' - even though I dont think gay guys ever had long hair styles frustratingly!

Obviously the song is referring to friends / brothers etc who have since departed the small town birthplace for sunnier climes or more exciting / rewarding careers in the big smoke (London?) and few never look back. As someone who moved out of my hometown to move to a better place, albeit not that far away I can empathize with the sentiment of the lyrics. It does seem to suggest that people who leave home somehow betray their roots, but given the limited options / smalltown mentality they are escaping who can blame them? Not me, I'm one of them in a way. So from these valleys of the green and the grey, and the rain soaked hills of West Yorkshire, I send you humble greetings. And if 'Slade the Leveller' ever reads this, nice work pal!

New Model Army – I Love The World Lyrics 13 years ago
Prolific band with over 120 songs out. Generally called a punk band, but more of a rock protest band, I'd say. Facetious title, early '89. Interesting perspective at the end: friend wants to go out and die, he wants to survive to say, "I told you so!" And if one day the final fire explodes across the whitened sky I know you've said you'd rather die and make it over fast With courage from your bravest friends, waiting outside for the end With no bitterness but an innocence that I can't seem to grasp I know somehow I will survive - this fury just to stay alive So drunk with sickness, weak with pain, I can walk the hills one last time Scarred and smiling, dying slow, I'll scream to no one left at all I told you so, I told you so, I told you so . . Oh God I love the world
