Babyshambles – Albion Lyrics 13 years ago
In the song Pete Doherty says that Englishmen (himself included) often ignore problems and prefer talking about nothingness or the latest gossip (“Down in Albion/We’re black and blue/but we don’t talk about that/Talk over Gin in teacups/and leaves on the lawn/Violence in bus stops and a pale thin girl with eyes forlorn”). This is the same “anywhere in Albion (=Britain), in Deptford, Catford, Walford, Digbeth, Mansfield etc. If you need an exact stereotype of this, the lyrical I will volunteer. (“If you are looking for a cheap sort/ Set in false anticipation/I’ll be waiting at the underground station”). (Not sure about that)
Next, the British are very proud of their history in each subject, like literature (“Yellowing classics”, old books that are now starting to yellow), their colonial times and when Britain used to be an explorer nation (“Coffe wallahs”, not sure what it is, but it seems like something old indian, “pith helmets”, the hat explorers like David Livingston wore). They are also proud about world-famous British products, like the “Reebok classic”, a brand known all around the world.
In the second chorus he says that most British girl are “tarts” and that is the same anywhere in Britain as well. I don’t know why he talks once “cheap sort ALL glint with perspiration” and once about a a cheap tart DON’T glint with perspiration”, which are opposites obviously.
