That line makes me visualize a party boss sitting back in a chair, flipping through a stack of money and compensating by attending church. So a similar idea, that a person attempts to correct a weeks worth of corruption with an hour of church and an occasional prayer. |

I don't think so, that seems a bit too far. Based on how Dylan writes and the time period he is from, high heels aren't a problem. Despite adopting Christianity, Dylan is typically against organized religion and imposing on other people, "Preachers preach of evil fates while teachers teach that knowledge waits..." And then for judging, "Old ladies sit, watch people in pairs, limited in sex they dare, to push fake morals, insult and swear, obscenity, who really cares? ...." |

It just dawned on me that Rubashov came from a wealthy family. There is the "born with a silver spoon in his mouth" meaning wealth. Perhaps there is some connection. Hope for even the wealthy... but why would that be at all significant? |

The president standing naked is referring to the Watergate crisis. Darkness at the Break of Noon is probably referring to an anti-communist book called Darkness at Noon. The last line of that verse is that there is no sense in trying. In the novel, Rubashov does not fight back, does not try, he simply is absolved. For there to be a shadow, there must be light, perhaps alluding to hope. |

I don't really think that he was trying to hint at an anti-scientific argument. He is probably an atheist and has conspiratory tendencies. He is probably making a parallel between the evolutionary principle and socio-economic class struggles. Natural selection failing because the upper class is not superior, just oppressive. |
