The song is definitely about immigrants.
The end seems to be about an immigrant being deported because people who were also illegal reported them."The passing night sky fills with people I know taking me home"
It is a critique on the crack down on "illegal" immigration, "instead we stand over the dead," even though the government benefits from them, "the vultures all well fed" and the fact that America is founded on immigration. "Deceived, entrapment through belief" |

I know this comment was posted nearly a decade ago, but it would be right to note that a lot of what happened during the making of Vitalogy influenced the end result. You must take into account that part of the reason people believed Cobain killed himself was because of the pressure that fame and fortune exerted on him. Vedder wasn't scared, he was upset. He saw that these fans were actually exerting their wants and needs on musicians such as Cobain, and he was unable to support them through his music. In fact, it is really interesting how that plays into the grunge movement. The reason it was popular was because it directly related to people who were troubled (meaning everyone) and because grunge musicians related with these people, they were therapy for the troubled. This probably made Vedder even more upset, because it wasn't about appreciating music and building an appreciation, it was about self-indulgence and self-fulfillment through PJ's music. This album was their breakaway from the grunge movement honestly. Merkin Ball and No Code moved into existential questions and philosophical ideas, things that repel a lot of those who hang on for emotional necessity. |

Your argument has too many fallacies to be considered valid. Pearl Jam has not died off, in fact their latest album has had quite a bit of success not to mention that Backspacer had a Billboard hit on it. If your mission is to knock Eddie Vedder down through words, you should probably try harder than posting a ridiculously false comment on songmeanings.com... |

I feel as if this isn't mocking God, but instead mocking misconceptions of God. The common misconception being that God is equatable to Santa Claus, He is going to give us everything we ask for if we are good. The reason I say this is because I wouldn't put it past Eddie and the guys to believe in the existence of God, and if this were the case which many seem to disagree with, then this song actually makes more sense because he is comparing the viewpoints of people, not necessarily Santa Claus and God per se. |

At the end of the first chorus, Eddie says "We all believe in...." and then it sounds like he talks the word, "God" |
