A line by line analysis of the song Australia: "Time to put the ear covers on… No!" - (these are the actual words, not earphones or anything else, it's ear covers, if you listen to the sing hard enough then you will hear this. This line is signifigant because someone is trying to take away a persons ability to hear, and the person obviously doesn't like this idea and gives a "No!" in response.) "(Born to multiply) Born to multiply Born to gaze into night skies" -(this line is very significant if you look at it straight forward, it's saying that humans are born for the purpose of procreating and nothing more. In contrast to this idea, the next line says that we are born to be dreamers, to "gaze into night skies" and appreciate nature and its beauty.) "All you want’s one more Saturday" -(This line is saying that all anybody wants is to live through another week, to survive a little longer. Also, who doesn't love Saturday's? You usually get the day off from school or work and you get to sleep in and party. I believe this idea also plays a part in the deeper meaning of this song, if this line was just about surviving another week, why not put Monday or Sunday? It's because on Sunday you go to church (er... well you're supposed to anyways) and Mondays just plain suck. the person wants to live to another SATURDAY, the fun day, the lazy day, the time this person get to relax and I believe this is significant in the fact that this person may not get many "Saturday" like days in the meaning of them being carefree and enjoyable.) "Well look here until then They’re gonna buy your nice time" -(Saying "Well look here" is a way of scolding or speaking to a child, the person telling the other person is an obvious authority figure, telling the other person that some people are going to "buy your nice time". This is the line that shoots up a little red flag in my mind and I automatically think 'prostitute! the person is a prostitute!') "So keep your wick in the air and your feet in the fetters" -(This is actually a really deep line, in it, the "wick" represents the persons head and thus if you replace wick with head you get 'keep you head in the air' or 'stay strong/proud'. I didn't know what "fetters" were so I looked them up and the definition for them is- A chain or manacle used to restrain a prisoner, typically placed around the ankles. So, from this we can rewrite this line as 'So keep your head held high and your feet in shackles', this is a very ironic line and in this irony there is a sadness, this person is in chains and trying desperately to keep strong even though they are in chains as someone elses prisoner... so sad.) "'Till the day you come in doing cartwheels" -( This line is saying that the person is only there to bring amusment, by doing "cartwheels" or aka performing sexual deeds to clients.) "We all crawl out by ourselves" -(crawling is a pretty degrading way to move around and to crawl out of somewhere is like what you would do after you've just been injured or escaped. Meaning the person who escaped had to a lot of effort into getting themselves out.) "And your shape on the dance floor Will have me thinking such filth and gouge my eyes" -(This is a very sexual visual, "your shape on the dance floor" is like saying 'how you look when you dance/perform your job and the next line "will have me thinking such filth" its not hard to realize that the "dance" that this person is performing is very sexual and dirty, a type of degrading dance like stripping/pole dancing. It makes the person watching ashamed enough to "gouge my eyes" for watching this tempting and awful sight of the person degrading themselves terribly just for their pleasure.) (You’d be damned to be one of us girl Faced with a dodo’s conundrum) -(The girl is not yet faced with the dodo's conundrum because the speaker says "You'd be damned" not 'you are damned', the speaker is identifying himself as a part of the group faced with the dodo's conundrum because he says "one of us". I didn't really know what to make out of the dodo's conundrum part of the song so I looked up conundrum-A question asked for amusement, typically one with a pun in its answer; a riddle. So basically a "dodo's conundrum" would be a pun in that dodo's are extinct birds that can't fly.) "I felt like I could just fly But nothing happened every time I try" -(Part of the Dodo pun in that dodos can't fly... and are extinct. The birds still TRY to fly even though they know damn well that it's impossible, but they keep dreaming and keep trying even so... probably why they went extinct in the first place.) "A dual-tone under wall" -(This line gives us a setting to place ourselves in, I think of "dual tone" as like ying and yang kind of, though I have no idea what the whole under wall part is about.) "Selfless fool who hoped he’d save us all" -(To me, even though I'm not in any way religious, this line screams Jesus at me. I mean they describe him as "selfless" and that he "hoped he'd save us all" the "fool" part is added in because his sacrifice didn't save the girls that's living life as a prostitute.) "Never dreamt of such sterile hands" -(The jesus from the previous line didn't think that a person with so few sins/"sterile hands" could exist and still be treated so terribly.) "You keep 'em folded in your lap" -(The person is obedient and listens to what they're told, they are docile.) "And raise them up to beg for scraps" -(The only time that this person does raise they're hands is to "beg for scraps" like some kind of dog or animal. This is a very demeaning line to me, this girl is hungry and begging, the only time that she uses effort is to get something she needs to survive, other wise she is very docile and complies with her owner.) "You know he's holding you down With the tips of his fingers just the same" -(This is also an incredibly demeaning line. Even thought the girl is begging and docile the "he" mentioned is suppressing her spirit and her will to live, "holding you down with" just "the tips of his fingers" the person hardly puts in effort when controling the girl.) "Well you'll be pulled from the ocean But just a minute too late" -(This line is really sad, it's saying that she'll be saved from the hell she's living in, only for her rescuers to be just a little to late to find her dead or her spirit completely broken.) "Or changed by a potion You’ll find a handsome young mate for you to love" -(These lines are a little sick in the sense that the girl is being tailored to fit the needs of someone who bought her, "changed by a potion" and losing herself in the process. The second line "you’ll find a handsome young mate for you to love" has a sort of fairy tail feeling to it when the reality is far darker and much more twisted, instead of a prince, the girl is getting a master for her to "love" in the sexual way, not the emotional way.) "You'll be damned to pining through the windowpanes you know" -(I looked up pining- Suffer a mental and physical decline, esp. because of a broken heart./Miss and long for the return of. And I looked up damned even though I sort of knew what it was already... I wanted the definition, damned-(in Christian belief) Condemned by God to suffer eternal punishment in hell: "the spirits of the damned". So this line is saying that the girl will be condemned by god to look threw windows at a life that should have been hers and suffering mentally and physically from the life that she lived instead... sad huh) "You'll trade your life for any ordinary Joe" -(I for one would trade my life with an ordinary Joe if I had that sort of life. But this is also a pretty sad line because the girls would give up all that she is in a heartbeat in order to be someone else. A person is supposed to be prideful in who they are, and when they aren't it's just sad.) "Will do and I will grow old Your nightmares only need a year or two to unfold" -(This is a kind of disturbing line because if the girl isn't living her nightmare right now them what other horrors could the future hold? The fact is that her nightmares really only do need a year or two to unfold.) "Been alone since you were twenty-one" -(I interpret this line as saying that she was like abducted or something when she was twenty-one, like how people drug and abduct girls and sell them into sex slavery and she has essentially been isolated from everyone that cares about her.) "You haven't laughed since January" -(This shows that she's depressed in the environment that she is in and hasn't been happy in months.) "You try and make of this as so much fun But we know it to be quite contrary" -(These lines show that she's trying to make the best of her situation and that she's trying to do her 'job' well, even though it's the exact opposite of what she wants to do.) "Dare to be one of us girl Faced with the android's conundrum" -(First she was "damned" to be one of them but now she "Dares" to be one of them, and because he's daring the girl he's asking if she's courageous enough to be strong enough so that she doesn't need to cry anymore.) "I felt like I should just cry But nothing happens every time I take one on the chin" -('Take one on the chin" means to receive the full brunt of something or to stand up to something adverse, such as criticism. I can infer from this that every time the people receive the full brunt of their emotions that they don';t cry, they just bottle their emotions up whether they want to or not.) "Yeah, Himmler in your coat" -(This line confuses me, I looked up Himmler and this is what came up- Heinrich Himmler 1900—45, German Nazi leader and chief of the secret police. I don't really know hoe this relates to a coat or what ever so I'm just not gonna comment further and let you guys decide what you make out of that.) "You don't know how long I've been Watching the lantern dim starved of oxygen" -(From theses lines you can guess that the speaker of the song has been watching the girl for a long time and that her soul is the "lantern" and the speaker is watching it be stifled from her environment making it "dim starved of oxygen" fire needs oxygen to survive just like humans need affection to keep themselves going, the oxygen being affection in this case or humanity.) "So give me your hand and let's jump out the window" -(I think suicide when I hear this line. I thank the speaker and the girl commited suicide together to escape they're "conundrums" and terrible lives. Or they're simply finally escaping together without killing themselves but I think suicide is more likely... again uber sad line!) Holy fucking shit that was a long review! My opinions are given on a line to line basis for your convienience and the song in my opinion is about a girl that's found herself living as a prostitute. I have no idea why the song is called Australia other then the fact that slavery (sex slavery) happens a lot over there and that its not very uncommon or any of that... I don't know though... I love this song though and I always hummed along until i wanted to learn the lyrics so that I could sing along... then I realized how disturbing they are! Still love this song though! |
