Love reading everyone's take on it, this is mine which is slightly different to most I've read here and how I relate to it. I see it through the eyes of someone who has partied hard and lived the youthful hedonistic lifestyle for a long time but priorities are starting to change as they mature and age, (summed up by the line - Well, you wanna do things differently) They are surrounded by mates who are just as into the crazy party lifestyle as ever which makes it difficult as they are ready for a change in lifestyle but still partake in it all on a regular basis (blames it on the friends you keep...). They don't enjoy it as much as they use to not so long ago, (old at breakneck speed), mainly because they want to start making the most of the weekends and their life during the day as opposed to sleeping away the whole weekend from a big bender the night before and generally feeling shit, they are becoming more interested in doing outdoor activities as they mature, aka climbing mountains, heading to the beach etc (hence the wetsuit part - i see it as a plea really to the people around him, cmon guys, please just let me relax and chill out, i'd prefer not to be feeling shit all the time, i've lived this wild lifestyle for too long and its taking its toll...go easy on me.....) Anyways, hope that has provided a bit of insight how i perceive and relate to it, no doubt many others can relate to this feeling as well. |

I disagree with comments suggesting the song lyrics are pointless / aren't deep. For me the song has also had a pretty obvisious meaning but this is just my interpretation. I interprete Jane as being a really close much loved friend, or maybe even a sibling, who is going through some heavy troubeled times, likely experiancing depression, she doesn't want to face every day life and has spent a lot of time being reclusive/sleeping the days away. Her friends/family want to help but don't really know how, its her birthday though and they want to make her forget all her problems and worries just for the day and be happy again. Pretty meaningful theme for me anyway. Anyone who has seen the enemy live knows this song is one of the highlights of the set, a huge crowd singalong that pours emotion. |
