Completely reminds me of a high school relationship. It was good for all the physical high I got from it, but it was really wretched otherwise. The particular girl I was with felt like a total leech. I could see how sticking with her would absolutely suffocate me. Deciding to give in would be absolute suicide. I would have to give all the parts of myself that I wanted to keep over to her - essentially losing myself to really love her. This was way too much for a young teenager. As an older man, I was totally willing to do this. And come to find out, you die a little to live a lot. So, yes, love is suicide. But it is a small death when you have a soulmate who you are committed to.
The other part that could be suicide is how much of you becomes exposed in an intimate relationship. Not just physical nakedness. But you are seen at your best and your worst. This can be tough.
Also, when you fight with your spouse it can feel like part of you is being ripped apart. The whole oneness thing in marriage is very real. Almost too scary. |

This song is totally about drugs and probably pot in particular. The realm of soft delusions floating on the leaves. A marijuana plant at its leaves smoked to get high and escape. Bright lit stay and steam of my misfortunes. Glow of the lit joint. Consequences of getting high or just the reason to get high in the first place - escape bad realities. Slipstream of thoughtless thoughts. This is the smoke. And thoughtless thoughts are the senseless thoughts of a good high. This album is about the high school experience. As a friend once told me, "I smoked a metric ton of pot in high school." He is a tenured professor in a mathematically rigorous social science now. |

@[MrEvilGoat:17674] thanks for sharing. There is certainly an element of the relief and exhilaration of being freed from something very restrictive that is taking place here too. Hence, the name Muzzle. |

This seems like such a deeply personal song - even compared to all others he wrote. It really captures a time in a persons life. Early middle age - 33 years old. Pull my collar up and face the cold on my own. Even with a wife and kids and supper waiting on the table you can feel like you are very much alone. You against the world sort of thing. And who is looking out for you? You just want to be a child. Or at least feel loved like one. Just loved because you are you. Not for really any other reason. For a moment I lose myself. Those rare moments when you aren't all up inside your own head. Just actually enjoying life. It really doesn't get much better here on earth. But those times seem really fleeting. This album was a huge part of my formative years. Yet I actually have come to appreciate the lyrics more as I have grown older. I can relate all too well to Billy's depression. Great pain makes great art. Just look at Psalm 77 and Psalm 88. Two really dark songs of anxiety and depression. Billy Corgan is the closest thing we have to a modern Psalmist. |
