I think this is a really cute song, and I love *love* love Taylor, but does anyone else think there are red flags here? First of all, throwing something at somebody out of anger in a relationship is never okay. It's abuse. Secondly, I don't think I'd want a guy who thinks it's funny when I'm mad. When I'm mad, it's because I've got something to say and he should be listening. (I'm not always right, but it's respectful to listen.) Anyways, I bet she's exaggerating to show how sweet the guy is and how in love they are, which is why I love the song so much :) |

| The Fray – How To Save A Life Lyrics | 13 years ago |

In my opinion, it's about mentoring a kid, maybe in the Big Brother/Sister program or maybe a niece or nephew or your own kid who is on drugs or having problems and doesn't know how to make the right decision. In this situation, you know there's a problem, but this kid maybe doesn't, and he will defend his actions to the death because it's the first real decision he's ever made on his own. It's a tough situation, because if you cross the line and come across as too controlling, they will want to stay their course even more, but if you aren't stern enough, they won't respect you. The lines "Lay down a list of what is wrong The things you've told him all along And pray to God he hears you" show the very real and tragic fact that honestly, you cannot do anything about it even though you can see him making the wrong choice and you know how he is going to hurt himself. All you can do is pray that he realises his own mistakes, that he has listened to the things you've been saying to him his whole life to prepare him for this moment. "As he begins to raise his voice You lower yours and grant him one last choice Drive until you lose the road Or break with the ones you've followed" Things are not going as planned, and the speaker is afraid of what will happen, but he knows it's absolutely crucial that he keep his cool or else drive the kid further into his problems. After this, the kid will make his own choice ("He will do one of two things He will admit to everything Or he'll say he's just not the same") The next line, "And you'll begin to wonder why you came", further alludes to this futility. |

I think it's a personal ad or a "missed connection" on Craigslist. The song is structured to go through the days of the week (Friday bank card, Saturday slump, Sunday walk, Monday, Tuesday bloom, Wednesday grocery, Thursday cab rush), so every day of the week, this guy is seeing this other person, and he's written this down as a clue so they will recognise him. The first line, "I loaned you a phone quarter", was my first clue. "Gave" and "loaned" have the same number of syllables, so both would musically work, but R.E.M. chose "loaned", showing listeners that the speaker intends to see this other person again and get their phone quarter back. "Our block": They live close together, but they keep running into each other in other places, like the grocery store at the corner of Vine or Weaver's Park. "Said, 'I'd read the ads'/Do you?" I'm imagining this person looking at the speaker after they've run into and acknowledged each other every day of the week in the same places and saying "You know, I'd read the ads" (unspoken: if you wanted to see me again, I'd read the ads) and then just walking away. It seems so mysterious and beautiful, you know? |
