I always felt this song was about the chaos of reincarnation. And in the chaos, the realization that this has happened many time before. Funny enough, I didn't know the true lyrics when I had this thought, and yet the lyrics listed here seem to strengthen my guess. BTW, I always thought the breathy over-voice at the end was saying "Now we are free!" Obviously wrong, but one can never truly tell in a BoC song. |

To me, it sounds like a frantic parent after their child gets run over by a car. Or perhaps getting hurt in some other way? This is one of those songs I can't even listen to any more, because it just brings me to tears just thinking about it. I read somewhere that one of PG's daughters almost died for some reason back while he was with Genesis. When she recovered, he realized that what he was missing, and that is what sowed the seeds in his mind for him wanting to leave the band. Maybe this song is a tribute to that event from long ago? |

While I agree with the dream scenario, I do have another interpretation people might not have thought about. I watched The Sixth Sense again not that long ago, and it made me think of this song. What if the song is about a person that was murdered? They are a spirit that is having violent flashbacks of the event, of the red rain of blood spilling everywhere. In the movie, I remember the line "See, it doesn't even hurt anymore." when he died, and yet nobody could hear him, because he was a spirit. Eventually, after seeing his own grave (in the song, not the movie), he accepts his fate and moves on, lending his trust to whatever is guiding him to his next state of being. |
