Here's my interpretation of this song. This song is a love letter to a love that has passed away; pretty obvious. This love was involved with the singer and the other subject of the song, Annie. Annie hears of the unnamed love's demise and comes to our narrator for comfort. The narrator swallows her own sadness to comfort Annie while thinking of our unnamed love. At the end of the song it has always sounded to me that she says, "Can't bear to on without you along" instead of the listed lyric of "Can't bear to go in without you now." This has always led me to believe that this love letter being written is actually a suicide note and that the singer can't bear to go on without her love. |
