this song I listened to so many times while on deployment, as it struck a cord in me. Reading the lyrics it seems to mean poor Shirley is waiting for a special friend who is away or possibly at war and is hopeful that he will return in the spring and whom will make good on the relationship. the phrase "we'll take all the doubtful ones in the fight and make them hold off til spring. take hold of their hallowed souls and save them from pain" might mean that any "suitors" who she comes across will be considered but not given into til the spring.
