I think this song is about the attraction and danger of meth, or "speed" (third line from the end). The "machine men" are people who've developed mental disorders due to speed. "Slide down on you" is the rationale that eventually you can get back to normal again. "Brakes in bad weather" has a double meaning; slippery, and being out of control and unable to stop. I've always thought that "gear" is "you're" in the fifth line from the end. I haven't stripped a willow, but I'm guessing that under the bark the wood is slippery. |
