I think it has nothing to do with war and soldiers. It is about someone who fell in love with somebody, but the person hurt him so much (maybe the person cheated on him or treated him in a bad way, so the relationship broke apart) that he thinks he can never trust a person he loves. Another person in the text tries to convince the hurt person that someday he will be happy again or even find a person who he can trust. |

I think this song contains many metaphors. "I used the deadwood to make the fire rise" Someone made a stupid thing, that made a situation much more worse.
