| Animal Collective – College Lyrics | 13 years ago |
| This song is really deep actually. All these people thinking college is a necessity; people thinking that life is ruined without a college education; parents pressuring kids to go to college to get that 'college education.' I think what Animal Collective is trying to say here, in the most simple way possible (so that the listener can analyze it for him/herself) is that, enjoy life because college honestly isn't that important and don't let that distract you from enjoying your life to the fullest. | |

I love this song. Jack Tatum sings it perfectly, almost as if he is actually telling the girl this in person- he sings it very softly yet emotionally. The lyrics are amazing also. He isn't singing a love song. He just has a thing for a girl- he likes her, and I personally feel like that's a bit deeper than love because it's more realistic while simultaneously being much more relatable. And damn, I love it when I can relate to a song so well. |

This whole album is fantastic; it tells a love story, and the songs are perfectly arranged for that. "Did You See The Words" is the first feelings of affection; "Grass" is first sexual/emotional contact with the person loved; "Flesh Canoe" seems to be telling events of a personal relationship and the writer getting closer to his loved one; "Purple Bottle" is just a giant expression of how much the writer loves her; and now "Bees" is when the album takes a turn for the worse. Bees is a wonderful song, one of my favorites off the album, so don't think 'turn for the worse' means 'this album starts to get bad' because every song on this album is perfect. But a turn for the worse as in the personal relationship with the writers loved one starts to diminish or become more complicated. The bees and their actions representing the love. "So sudden, the bees, they came flying. So violent, the bees, they came sly So scary, the bees, they came wide. So wild, the bees, they came crying" This whole stanza is pretty much the song and its meaning- the Bees symbolizing the actual love. "The love was scary...the love was wild...etc." This part of the song is saying 'things are falling apart between us' and Avey is really wise to use Bees for this. After this song, the album rolls into Banshee Beat, which describes not the break up, but the feelings of the break up, which gives evidence that this song is about the falling apart of love. I don't know- this is my interpretation. The song's meaning is ruined if it only has one specific meaning, so I'm not saying this is it; make your own interpretation. That's the best thing about Animal Collective and its members; they all have multiple meanings to each of their songs. |

This song seems to be about religion and the songwriters skepticism about his beliefs/support of religion. For example the 3rd stanza states "I got the star of David hanging over me..But oh mother Mary I find it hard to believe..That some ones hands no different to mine..could be hung on a wall..held as divine" This is the singer calling out Jesus if anything. 'The hang on the wall' part being the cross jesus was hung on, which is commonly found in christian homes hanging o the wall. He's skeptic because Jesus's hand is just as his own, so how can he be all powerful (devine)? The singer then points out his skepticism of religion, especially how it influences children. The 4th stanza says "We are so happy to see..All of our children will run blind and free." By this the writer is simply saying 'we (everyone) don't give a fuck if religion brainwashes our children.' He even goes on to sing "you fed em [children] too well on tv" which again points out religion's and the media's brainwash of children. "The tears in my eyes..fall from books I have read..If I could talk to you And only speak the truth" This is a really strong lyric, and a sad one. The writer/singer is pretty much saying that he reads all of these religious books (Bible most likely) but doesn't believe in them, though he wishes he does believe in them. 'If' indicates that he does not believe what is written in the Bible (assuming it's the Bible he's reading). Though he does not believe, he wants to know the truth from a higher being (God[s]). Probably the most depressing lyric of the song, because he wishes he can honestly talk to someone he does not believe. This is a great song, and has a great meaning, though it's vague. Gotta give respect to the singer about singing about such a sensitive subject. |
